But the overall vibe is the same, as you'd imagine.
First announced back in October 2011... a remake of the 1989 tear jerker drama set in Louisiana, Steel Magnolias, with an all-African American cast that includes: Queen Latifah (she's also executive producer) as M'Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Jill Scott as Truvy, Adepero Oduye as Annelle and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad as Shelby.
The original Steel Magnolias starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Darryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts.
This all-black reincarnation for Lifetime is being directed by Kenny Leon (ABC's A Raisin in The Sun, Broadway's Fences and The Mountaintop), from a script adapted from the 1989 film screenplay by Sally Robinson.
Supporting each other through their triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children - and hair and nails - all the important topics that bring women together.
Still no ETA date yet, but it's expected to debut in the fall.
Lance Gross, Tory Kittles and Michael Beasley co-star.
Here's trailer number 2:

I'm not all that excited that Jill Scott in the role of Truvy.. being that I don't like her and all..
( just my personal opinion ) for the people that like her... but the rest of the cast is great..
and to the person going on about remakes... they make remakes of movies all the time for pete's sake.. you talk like this is the first time its ever been done... I'm glad that black actors are getting roles.... and I'm going to watch it...I don't think people will be loosing sleep if you don't watch.... it

Excited about this remake. I think they picked a great cast. I hoped Alfre Woodard gets an award for playing weezer. They picked the perfect person IMO.
