Principal photography for Star Trek 2 is in progress currently, although we still know very little about the story it's going to tell - other than who's in the film.

It doesn't even have an official title yet - I doubt it'll just be called Star Trek 2.

Nothing special, but here are 2 stolen shots from the set - the one below features Zachary Quinto as Spock and Benedict Cumberbatch as the film's resident villain dueling it out. Looks like Spock is administering the Vulcan death-grip on him.

And the other, above, features Zoe Saldana, apparently in the same battle sequence, as Uhura, using a phaser to save Spock from Cumberbatch's villain, says MTV, where I found the pics; although we don't know if she's successful.

Here's MTV's assessment of the scene, which may or may not be a spoiler alert:

In this first look at director J.J. Abrams' currently shooting "Star Trek" sequel, we see quite clearly that Zachary Quinto's returning Spock and the newcomer played by Cumberbatch are very much not friends. The two are locked in battle on top of what's being described as "a Space Barge set."

During the battle and in the photo you can see here, Spock does his best to stop his foe using his famous Vulcan Death Grip, but the move fails; Cumberbatch's character is able to overpower the grip and regain the upper hand in his struggle against the Star Fleet officer. Interestingly, Spock is not the only one wearing a Star Fleet uniform. Cumberbatch's unknown character is seen wearing a black version of the uniform under his silver overcoat. A sign that this man was a friend before he was a foe?

In another shot from the epic battle, Zoe Saldana joins the fight once again as Uhura. She's using a phaser to save Spock from Cumberbatch's villain, though whether or not she'll be successful is a completely different story altogether.

The sequel is expected in theaters in May 2013.

There is no "Vulcan 'Death Grip'". It's a nerve pinch that renders a person unconscious. That's all.

    HOWEVER.

Spock INVENTED a so-called "Vulcan death grip" on Captain Kirk as a means to fool the Romulans into believing Kirk was dead, so as to bring him back on board the USS Enterprise without causing suspicion. Its application appeared similar to that of the mind meld, but it was administered with two hands, and without speaking.

    Nerd out.
