The question raised in our previous posts about this new hour-long drama that Jennifer Lopez is developing for ABC Family that will center on a lesbian couple who suddenly have their already child-heavy household turned upside down when a wayward teenage girl moves in, was whether the project would feature a diverse cast (especially since J-Lo is the creator of the series) - and even more specifically, whether the lesbian couple would be a mixed race pairing.
The answer to that question is now officially yes, with news today that the lesbian couple will be played by Teri Polo (The West Wing) and Sherri Saum (Rescue Me).
ABC Family already picked up the pilot for a potential series that it'll be titled The Fosters, with notice that the above family will be a "multi-ethnic" one, so we can expect the kids in their child-heavy household will also represent some diversity, although no word yet on casting for the children roles, or the wayward teen girl who turns the household upside down.
Here's the official description of the series from the press release:
"The Fosters" tells the story of Stef and Lena Foster, a mixed race couple who are raising a biological son, along with several adopted children. When Lena decides to take in Callie, a troubled teen with an abusive past, Callie's disruptive ways threaten to turn the Fosters lives upside down.
Polo will portray Stef Foster, described as a tough but kind police officer who is not eager to add to their already large brood, but soon realizes her family may be Callie's best hope for a better life. Saum will portray Lena Foster, described as an altruistic school principal, who is determined to save as many kids as she can and agrees to take in Callie without Stef's knowledge.
J-Lo won't be acting in it, although she may guest star from time to time. Her primary role here is as executive producer, along with Simon Fields and Greg Gugliotta.
Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige wrote the pilot, and will also executive produce.
When we have news on the casting of the young ones, so will you.
Saum's resume is full of TV work primarily, from 3 seasons on Sunset Beach in the late 1990s, 2 seasons on Rescue Me, to episodes of Heroes, In Treatment, CSI: NY and many others.
