After months of doom and gloom reports about disappointing ratings and the lackluster performance of the Oprah Winfrey Network, there are hopeful signs of new life.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav said today that there has been an improvement in the overall performance at OWN. According to him, there has been a 20% ratings growth in the second quarter among the network's core audience of women between the ages of 25-54.

Zaslav made it a point about the improving numbers, and added that "canidily we're significantly ahead of where we thought we would be."

He further said that the network "spilled less red ink in the second quarter" than it did in the previous one. Though a lot of the savings this quarter was due to the cancellation of the Rosie O'Donnell talk show.

However, he added that more money would be spent in the future on marketing and programming, and that they expect OWN to actually turn a profit in late 2013.

    Hi, MJO!

Oprah finally realized the inspirational crap doesn't interest the general public. Notice Oprah interviewing trashy reality TV stars the Kardashian family. Oprah is finally realizing she's got to give audience what they want which is a lot of dirt.

Good for you Oprah, I know the haters are upset though. :)

I don't know the first thing about running a network, but isn't it ridiculous to expect a profit in the first year or two of STARTING a network. Doesn't it take time to establish yourself, build your identity and develop a relationship with segments of the population...even if you are a brand unto yourself. Running a hugely successful show and running a network are two different beasts. In the end, though, I see success for Oprah.

I'm glad to hear the good news. I hope OWN succeeds.

It's all of those Sunday prime time specials. I still stand by my original belief, that Oprah should have continued her talk show and transferred show over to "OWN". I know that she works like a beast, but she could have dropped down to half the amount of shows she normally does and air a new episode in prime time a couple of times a week, i.e. Tuesday and Thursday to get the ratings going. She is so talented and smart. She can do this. She just has to get the proper, quality content.

@Mr. Friendly: MJo, I see you find out how to create a second account. Yay!

    UNFUNNY COMMENTS ARE UNFUNNY.

@MJO: You heard what Gayle said! She's too busy reminding us about her full time job on "CBS This Morning" on internet comment boards. But clearly that's Gayle.

  • ALM | August 1, 2012 1:59 PM

@MJo: Hi! You've got jokes, I see. I'm not Gayle. I doubt that she has time to comment on message boards seeing that she has a full time job on "CBS This Morning". Keep hope alive, though MJo. :)

YEAH, I WAS REALLY CONFUSED THAT SHE DIDN'T CONTINUE SOME FORM OF HER SHOW. IT WOULD HAVE ENCOURAGED HER FANS TO MAKE THE TRANSITION TO CABLE. THEY CARE ABOUT OPRAH, NOT RANDOM PROGRAMMING.
