A film from New Zealander, Taiki Waititi, which we've been following since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010, is now finally becoming available Stateside, on DVD and Blu-ray, so you'll get a chance to check it out.

Kino Lorber has announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Boy, a quirky and moving coming-of-age film from director Taika Waititi that tells the story of eleven-year-old "Boy" and his adventures during the summer of 1984.

The longer story goes... it's 1984, and Michael Jackson is king - even in Waihau BayNew Zealand. Here we meet Boy (yes, that's what he's called) an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Shortly after gran leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version - an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat enters... oh, and did I mention there's a Michael Jackson sub-plot...

It's a whimsical coming of age story that's recommended.

Boy comes to Blu-ray and DVD from Kino Lorber on July 9. Bonus material includes Two Cars, One Night, an Academy Award-nominated short by director Taika Waititi; interviews and B-roll footage; Kickstarter update videos; and the theatrical trailer.

In addition to the Sundance Film Festival, the film won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, won the Audience Award at AFI Fest, and won the Grand Prix-Best Feature Film, Generation K Plus at the Berlin International Film Festival.
