Stephan James ("Race," "Selma") has booked a lead role opposite Sanaa Lathan in "Shots Fired," a new Fox event TV series from Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood, that examines the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town in Tennessee.
The drama stars Lathan as an expert investigator who digs into the cases, alongside a special prosecutor (to be played by Stephan James) sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such volatile cases, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts.
Also previously cast in the series is DeWanda Wise, who will play a resident of one of the small town's worst neighborhoods, whose son was killed by the police, and is initially concerned about sharing her story with the investigators for fear of being harassed by the local cops.
The event series is scheduled to debut later this year.
Stephan James can currently be seen starring as Jesse Owens in the Focus Features film "Race."
"Shots Fired" is produced by Undisputed Cinema and Imagine Television, in association with 20th Century Fox Television.
The series is co-written by Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood, and is executive-produced by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo.
Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct.
