Who knew? I didn't know before today that rapper K'Naan and actress Patricia McKenzie both co-star in David Cronenberg's eagerly-anticipated Cosmopolis. Twilight star Robert Pattinson looks to wash off all that vampire angst (and teenage girl fans) in what looks like quite a shift for him.

It's Cronenberg after all; put the kids to bed :)

And it's a film on my "to-see" list for the year.

What's it about?

New York is in turmoil, the age of capitalism is drawing to a close end. Eric Packer, a high finance golden boy, dives into a white limousine. While a visit from the President of the United States paralyses Manhattan, Eric Packer has one obsession: getting a haircut at his barber’s at the other end of the city. As the day goes by, chaos sets in, and he watches helplessly as his empire collapses. Also he is sure that someone is going to assassinate him. When? Where? He is about to live the most decisive 24 hours of his life.

The film is based on a novel by Don DeLillo and is set to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival some time over the next 10 days, with a Stateside release afterward (though no date yet).

It's not entirely clear what K'Naan's role is, although, per the film's website, his character is named Sufi rapper; so I guess he's just that, a Sufi rapper :)

The above image is from the film, so clearly, something happens to his character to put him in the state that he's in, in the image.

He also briefly features in the trailer.

As for Patricia McKenzie, she features more prominently in the trailer. Her character's name is Kendra Hays. The Canadian actress has done mostly TV, appearing in an episode of Soul Food. But she's definitely not new to the game.

The image of her below is also from the film.

The trailer follows after the image.

By the way, K'Naan also contributed to the film's soundtrack.

You all turned me on to Cronenberg. I look forward to this film, as well and to Pattinson's visage minus so much glitter. LOL

The rapper isn't an active character in the story; he has died recently (can't remember the reason) and there's some grand funeral procession going on for him that has stopped traffic. That's how it goes in the book at least...
