While it was still a pain in my backside, being stuck in the house during Hurricane Sandy did provide me with an opportunity to catch up on some long-overdue DVD viewing.  First up was the International Emmy-nominated TV series from Brazil, Filhos do Carnaval (Hijos del Carnaval), an HBO Latin America Originals production.

Rel Dowdell's 2nd feature film, Changing The Game, which stars Tony Todd (Candyman,  24, The Event); Sean Riggs (Stomp the Yard), actor/rapper Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones (A Day in the Life, Blade: The Series, Law & Order, NCIS: LA) and Irma P. Hall (Soul Food) is heading to DVD on August 28. The film had a limited theatrical release back in May of this year.

Russell Costanzo's 'The Tested' Starring Aunjanue Ellis On DVD July 24

The Tested, based on the award-winning 2005 short film of the same name directed by Russell Costanzo and starring Aunjanue Ellis, Armando Riesco, Tobias Truvillion and Michael Morris Jr, will be available on DVD on July 24 this year. The film, which explores the complex relationship between mother and son grieving a family member, screened at the New Voices In Black Cinema Festival back in February. Here’s a film I should’ve watched three years ago upon its limited theatrical release; although it was indeed limited to only NY and LA. Sony Film Classics' 2009’s Indie Sugar is not your average sports flick; it avoids the usual for the love of the game and the glorious champion cliché’s so common among this genre.

Millenium Films' A Little Bit of Heaven, directed by Nicole Kassell and written by Gren Wells, will open on limited release May 4, 2012, and will see a DVD release on June 12, 2012. The film has been available on Itunes since April 3rd. The rom-com about a young woman dealing with life with cancer, stars Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Kathy Bates, Rosemarie DeWitt, Romany Malco, Whoopi Goldberg amongst others.
