I really love this actually, despite the international perception of the quality of Nollywood films (even though that's changing, slowly but surely); I'll almost always applaud any efforts that unite instead of divide across the diaspora.

I've never been a big fan of the films of hermetic indie filmmaker Hal Hartley, even though he was once considered one of a handful of young trailblazing auteurs back in the late 80s/early 90s, along with the likes of Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes and others, who were producing esoteric, smart, cheaply-made arty films that appealed to a small, tightly-knit, proud subculture of young (mostly white) film lovers; films that defined his auteurist style, like The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, which featured some of the earliest performances by actors like Eddie Falco, and Henry Fool years later.

Take my word for it... After years of experience, I know that it ain't easy to put one together. It's tough, draining, demanding, brutal and exhausting. (And that's before the festival has even begun) But in the end, it's always worth it.

News on the march..... definitely something I'll be keeping an eye on, and reporting as things develop. It immediately reminded me of the Spanish/Al-Jazeera co-production forum we reported on earlier this year in which 10 African filmmakers were to pitch their new film projects to Spanish film producers and TV commissioning editors including representatives of Al-Jazeera Documentary Channel - an event that took place as part of the Tarifa African Film Festival in Spain, in June.
