Berlin's WCF Launches Training Program in Africa, Awards Over $200K to International Films

Berlinale World Cinema Fund, an endowment backed by the Berlin International Film Festival, has announced a new initiative in a number of African countries to promote local cinema. The first WCF Factory will be held in Burundi this August.

Screening from August 12th through September 1st at New York's IFC Center and August 19th through September 8th at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles, the 2011 edition of IDA's DocuWeeks will present seventeen feature films and seven shorts from sixteen different countries in theatrical runs designed to qualify the films for consideration for The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ annual Oscar Awards.

Spike Lee And "Miracle At St. Anna" Producers Awarded $46 Million

Looks like things are looking up for Spike Lee. A french court has ordered TF1 Intl., the sales and distribution arm of the Gallic net, to pay Euros32 million ($45.8 million) to him along with his Miracle At St. Anna writer James McBride and Italian producers (On My Own) on the film since the company didn't honor the distribution agreement.

Directed by Park Chan-Wook, Oldboy is the South Korean thriller that originally took the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Spike Lee is the most recent director in talks to helm the project, as rumors of a US remake have lingered since 2008.

Maybe one of the hardest working showmen in the UK right now, love him or hate him... he has at least 2 new films I can immediately recall that are currently in circulation - the dramedy Huge, and the prison drama Screwed; he's also shooting (or may have already wrapped production on) the marriage romcom, The Knot, and is in pre-production for an upcoming drama titled Bliss!.

Jonah Hill announced via Tweeter over the weekend that his big-screen adaptation of the popular late 1980s/early '90s TV cop drama 21 Jump Street, has officially wrapped principal photography, and will hit theaters on March 16, 2012.

It was announced today that Cross Creek Productions (financiers and producers of Black Swan), Danny DeVito (yeah that Danny DeVito), and his longtime producer partner Michael Shamberg, are getting together to finance and produce the long-in-gestation film version of Lawrence Block's novel A Walk Among The Tombstones, to be directed by D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) .
