New In Theaters - Skip "Cowboys And Aliens;" See "Attack The Block" Instead

The title says all you need to know; 2 movies with "alien attack" themes amongst the films opening this weekend. 1 is ridiculously expensive but sucks; the other cost a fraction of what the first one cost, and is a better film.

Director Steve James' (Hoop Dreams, Stevie) remarkable new documentary The Interrupters, about the efforts by volunteers of the non-violence organization Cease Fire, to combat street violence in Chicago, will be shown in New York and Chicago starting in late July and August.

Profiled on the old S&A site in April this year, when it was revealed that it would screen at the Atlanta Film Festival, Everyday Sushine: The Story of Fishbone will receive an official theatrical release this fall, courtesy of Pale Griot Films, opening in New York City, on October 7th, at ReRun Theater in Brooklyn, followed by an L.A. run at Laemmle Sunset 5, beginning on October 21st.

Screening from August 12th through September 1st at New York's IFC Center and August 19th through September 8th at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles, the 2011 edition of IDA's DocuWeeks will present seventeen feature films and seven shorts from sixteen different countries in theatrical runs designed to qualify the films for consideration for The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ annual Oscar Awards.

Despite the behind-the-scenes brouhaha, whether manufactured or real, Michael Rapaport's documentary on legendary hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest, titled Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, will open in theaters this weekend, in a limited release, starting in New York and L.A. and then expanding to several other cities through the end of August.

Maybe one of the hardest working showmen in the UK right now, love him or hate him... he has at least 2 new films I can immediately recall that are currently in circulation - the dramedy Huge, and the prison drama Screwed; he's also shooting (or may have already wrapped production on) the marriage romcom, The Knot, and is in pre-production for an upcoming drama titled Bliss!.
