Black films that came out during the 1970's get too often shortchanged when people dismiss them as just "blaxplotataion" movies. The reality was that there was an extraordinary range of black films released threatrically during that period that dealt with every type of genre from action to dramas to comedies to romance to art house to documentaries. The 1972 film Black Rodeo is a case in point.

Undoubtedly one of the most obscure and rarely seen films from the 1970's is the 1972 film Georgia, Georgia. The low budget film, which was based on an original screenplay by Maya Angelou is often mistakingly credited as also being directed by her too.

We covered this film on the old S&A site, while it was still playing the festival circuit, and when it enjoyed a lengthy though limited theatrical run in 2010.

Well, I've been waiting for this to happen, and finally it is. Lionsgate Home Video announced earlier this week that Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown with Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro and Robert Forester is finally coming out on blu-ray DVD, on October 4th.

Here's the trailer for the super low budget absolutely no shame about it rip off of Predator, titled Flesh Wounds, starring Kevin Sorbo (you know that guy who played Hercules in the cheap syndicated show awhile back), and our guy Bokeem Woodbine. If it's not obvious, the film will be released exclusively on DVD on July 26th.

So... for some reason, Spike Lee's 2008 WWII drama, Miracle At St Anna is only just now getting a proper DVD release in the UK. Until now, folks across the pond have had to watch it illegally apparently.
