We try as hard as we can to stay on top of things, but occasionally something will slip by us... like this: last week it was announced that the 1991 HBO film The Josephine Baker Story, starring Lynn Whitfield , will be released on blu-ray DVD; though no official release date has been set as yet.

Chadian auteur Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s Cannes Grand Jury Prize-winning film, Un homme qui crie (A Screaming Man), which was picked up for North American distribution by Film Movement last fall, has finally made its way to DVD land (released yesterday), after enjoying a limited theatrical run earlier this year.

It took a while but finally F. Gary Gray's 1996 action heist thriller Set It Off is finally coming out on blu-ray DVD on Aug. 30, from New Line/Warners Home Video.

In my review of Djo Tunda Wa Munga's crime drama, Viva Riva!, I highlighted the film's audacious depictions of the kind of orchestrated sexuality and violence rarely seen in African cinema (specifically cinema of the DRC - the Democratic Republic Of The Congo, where such scenes are taboo); a kind of "fuck-you" to the status quo in a country that hadn't seen a feature film produced in over 2 decades.

Black films that came out during the 1970's get too often shortchanged when people dismiss them as just "blaxplotataion" movies. The reality was that there was an extraordinary range of black films released threatrically during that period that dealt with every type of genre from action to dramas to comedies to romance to art house to documentaries. The 1972 film Black Rodeo is a case in point.

Undoubtedly one of the most obscure and rarely seen films from the 1970's is the 1972 film Georgia, Georgia. The low budget film, which was based on an original screenplay by Maya Angelou is often mistakingly credited as also being directed by her too.
