Unless your head has been buried in the sand, or with equanimity in the clouds, you’ll be familiar, even a little bit, with the somewhat recent growing Chinese presence in Africa, and all the complexities and criticisms that have accompanied that development; Some calling it neo-colonialism; others approaching it more from a strictly capitalist standpoint. And still there are other POVs.

For those who may not know... if you don't have cable TV, or if your cable TV provider doesn't carry BBC America, you can still watch the second season of Luther, the critically acclaimed psychological crime drama starring one Idris Elba, which premiered for stateside audiences, on September 28th.

In my review of Djo Tunda Wa Munga's crime drama, Viva Riva!, I highlighted the film's audacious depictions of the kind of orchestrated sexuality and violence rarely seen in African cinema (specifically cinema of the DRC - the Democratic Republic Of The Congo, where such scenes are taboo); a kind of "fuck-you" to the status quo in a country that hadn't seen a feature film produced in over 2 decades.

Talented Chicago independent filmmaker James Reed Jr's genuinely funny and sweet natured feature comedy Get A Job, chronicles the crazy and choatic situations when a well-meaning and determined, but hapless young comic (Corey Hendrix) with his best friend (Milton "Lil' Rell" Howery), try to find a job to support himself and his wife. However after having no luck, Hendrix and his friend decide to go into business themselves, with a plan to open their own comedy club, only to wind up getting in way over their heads.

So if you have a Netflix account, as I know a lot of you do, you really should check out this compilation of short films by up and coming African filmmakers - one of them being a sci-fi short titled Pumzi, from Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu.
