Anyone in the Chicagoland area can't afford to miss this. On Sunday September 4 at 2PM, J. Kevin Swain's documentary about the popular and highly influential music show Soul Train, The Hippest Trip In America, will be screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center in downtown Chicago.

As announced last week, in a likely effort to win over support from the historical organization and its followers, DreamWorks Studios held a special advanced screening of The Help at the 102nd NAACP National Convention just yesterday, July 27, at the Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 in Downtown Los Angeles.

I'll be seeing The Help this Thursday evening, and looking forward to finally taking a look at it, after over a year of discussing it, and reading your mostly derisive comments about it over that same period of time. Although I've read the book, and obviously familiar with the content, I really don't know what to expect here - whether it'll be a faithful adaptation, or something more transgressive. I'm leaning towards the former, but I'll find out for sure in a couple of days.

To be introduced by DJ Wiz, and directors Hasan Pore and Ron Lawrence, a screening of Founding Fathers is scheduled for later this month - a 2009 documentary that "expands the scope" of the commonly accepted origins of hip-hop culture, by "looking at influential artists from Queens and Brooklyn, including the Disco Twins, Dance Master, and Grand Master Flowers"

If you live in Madison, Mississippi, or anywhere close to that city, AND you'd like to get an early look at what will likely be one of the more polarizing films this year, The Help, AND you've got the money to spend, you're in luck, because the first public screening of the film will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the Malco Grandview, 221 Grandview Boulevard, Madison, Mississippi. The rest of us won't get to see it until August 10.
