On the heels of my Machine Gun Preacher post comes news that Somali/Canadian rapper K'naan will make his big screen acting debut, alongside Steve Coogan and Stephen Dorff, in an adaptation of a Belgian Congo-set romance novel titled The Catastrophist, written by Ronan Bennett.

First announced in June as a possibility, Deadline confirmed yesterday that it is now a reality, as HBO has reportedly ordered a pilot episode, which Spike Lee will direct, from a script penned by John Ridley, created by Doug Ellin (Entourage) and Mike Tyson, both also wearing producer hats, along with the aforementioned Spike.

Last month, he was reportedly at the top of the short list of actors in contention for the role; today, it's been confirmed that Josh Brolin will indeed headline Spike Lee's US adaptation of Oldboy, the Japanese manga made popular by Park Chan-wook's 2003 award-winning film.

I suspected as much, given how late in the year Focus Features plans to release the film, despite its Sundance Film Festival debut in January, 8 months ago. And it's obviously definitely a good look for the film (Pariah), its director (Dee Rees) and star (Adepero Oduye).

I just received notice that Tyler Perry will go on a national tour this fall with a new play he wrote and will direct titled The Haves and The Have Nots. He doesn't act in this one though; strictly a behind the stage effort this time.

I recall Sergio's post earlier this year, announcing that the film was coming to Blu-ray, in which he touched on this, calling the film "the modern black urban male ultimate macho fantasy," in reference to the fact that it's so well loved and appreciated by brothas in hip-hop.
