"Of course I had trepidations. Why do I have to play the mammy? But what do you do as an actor if one of the most multifaceted and rich roles you've ever been given is a maid in 1962 Mississippi? Do you not take the role because you feel like in some ways it's not a good message to send to Black people? No. The message is the quality of the work. That is the greater message... As Black women, we're always given these seemingly devastating experiences - experiences that could absolutely break us. But what the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls the butterfly. What we do as Black women is take the worst situations and create from that point."

Well, it hasn't been officially announced yet, but the UK's Daily Mail is reporting this morning that the secretive role Naomie Harris has long been in the running for, since we first announced that she was being considered for a part in the next James Bond movie, is not quite THE Bond girl role, but rather, Miss Moneypenny, assistant to M, James Bond's boss - a role originated by Lois Maxwell who played the character from 1962's Dr No to 1985's A View To A Kill.

"... I’m hearing from solid Motion Picture Academy sources that Oprah Winfrey is topping the list of candidates to host the 84th Oscars next February. If the widely seen gig is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes special and a post-Oscars show airing only on the Oprah Winfrey Network, it would give the struggling cable channel some added exposure. But I’m hearing that is a very separate potential deal. After all, ABC continues to have exclusive rights to Oscar broadcasts — and likely would not be happy about giving up rights to backstage access, etc. However, given Winfrey’s longtime relationship with ABC — anything is possible. The main thing: Academy honchos firmly believe Winfrey could greatly expand the show’s audience. They also believe the best time to hatch this plan is this first year following the end of the 25-year run of “Oprah” — while that show’s huge audience of viewers still miss their daily “fix” the TV icon gave them for the past quarter-century... Maybe one of the hardest working showmen in the UK right now, love him or hate him... he has at least 2 new films I can immediately recall that are currently in circulation - the dramedy Huge, and the prison drama Screwed; he's also shooting (or may have already wrapped production on) the marriage romcom, The Knot, and is in pre-production for an upcoming drama titled Bliss!.
