The book was published in 2005, became a best-seller, and some 3 years later, it was announced that a feature film adaptation was in development, with Neil Gaiman saying he'd like Morgan Freeman as Mr Nancy. Today, in an interview with MTV, Gaiman says a TV mini-series is now more likely.

On the surface, this seems like an odd pairing... but, I'll reserve comment until I have more data. Besides, Tyler Perry does want to stretch himself, and expand his reach.

If the news that Beyoncé was going to star in a remake of A Star Is Born, directed by Clint Eastwood, didn't get you excited for the project, then maybe this will... then again, maybe not :)

Since we've heated up S & A with our discussion on whether films about slavery could be made, as well as films about slavery vs films about the Jewish Holocuast, I thought maybe I would revisit a post I wrote back for the old S & A site, last summer about films I call "castor oil"movies. One commenter did mention it, and since we have so many new readers, maybe it's the perfect time to revisit that column.

Here's a project that's been in the works since 2009, when we first announced it. I'd forgotten all about it, and I'm surprised to learn that it's still in development, and not dead. At least that's what we can gather from the below quote from the director Kasi Lemmons, revealed in an interview with women-centered site TheWip.net, posted just yesterday.

I wasn't already familiar, but from the little research I did, I learned that the Black Mafia Family (BMF), was a drug cartel that was created in Detroit, Michigan in the late 1980s, by Demetrius "Big Meech" and Terry Flenory. Over the following decade or so, their organization grew into a hugely successful nationwide enterprise.

"It’s still grinding. We’re talking about coming onto these films and trying to get the financing for stuff that’s not your standard, down the middle of the road studio movie fare. It’s tough. People think it’s niche, although our treatment of the script, it’s not a biopic. It’s not deep. It’s not serious fare. It’s not a cradle to grave sort of overview of his entire life. The movie takes place over a day and a half of his life — a very intense day and a half of his life but a lot of people haven’t even engaged because of what they perceive it’s going to be. They go “Oh, we don’t want to do a movie like that.” I say “Have you read it?” “No, I haven’t read it.” “Well read it and then say you don’t want to do a movie like that.” So it’s having to push through a lot of these things and confront people. Once they read it, they’re like “Oh, this is great.” So everyone’s really dying to be the second person to say yes and to invest in this film."

I've been meaning to get to this topic since it was bought up briefly on last Weds (June 15th) podcast and I thought right now I would throw it out there to hear what you say. But seriously could a serious film about slavery in the U.S. be made?
