Things that make you go hmm... our friends at Latino Review are reporting that Marvel Studios is finally prepping a Black Panther movie.

As you all know, we've all been hoping for Marvel to create a new film franchise around a black superhero, with Luke Cage and Black Panther being the 2 whose names seem to come up often.

As I said before, I'm not holding my breath on this; we talked about the possibility of Marvel introducing either Luke Cage or Black Panther in the sequel to The Avengers, which is now definitely a go; but those chances are likely slim to none.

Maybe that's all about to change... maybe Marvel has indeed been listening to all your cries of injustice... maybe... :)

I should note that I actually recieved an email from an actor's rep a few days ago, telling me that his client was going to star as the villain in a Black Panther movie, although I can't reveal who that actor is, nor the villain referenced. Sorry. If all this turns out to be true, then I will... until then, here's Latino Review's exclusive write-up on the news, courtesy of El Mayimbe:

Anyway, there has been much speculation as to the upcoming two Marvel films which have yet to be announced. It’s painfully obvious one of them is going to be the sequel to the Avengers. But what about the other one? Without further adieu, let’s get right to it… Hell yes folks… THE BLACK PANTHER is going to headline his own film! How do I know? Let’s say I got it from FOUR different trusted sources. Marvel is going BIG TIME after the urban film audience and I applaud them for that. Last year, it was reported that Marvel hired Mark Bailey to pen the script and I hear the script is fantastic. The clues were always there. They showed Wakanda on the map in Iron Man 2 and Captain America’s shield is made from Vibranium which also hails from Wakanda.

So there ya have it; it's been a loooong time coming, if this actually happens. T’challa might be coming to a big screen near you.

The next obvious question is, who should play him?

Stay tuned...

i hope its black panther and not luke cage....our young black men need to see the image of a king than that of a thug every black hero ive seen so far come to live action has always been a thug...i dont understand why holly is always brain washing black men...sure they can empower black women with storm and cat woman and so on...but black men...nooooo...our black men need to see they can be something other than a thug!!...come on hollywood...its like they have a problem with seeing a black man as an intelligent, skilled, powerful and just leader.....why is society always giving us negative arc types....dont get me wrong i loved blade and so on but a change is needed...weasley snipes was suppost to be working on black panther since 1992...and then all of a sudden he gets arrested for some reason

Yeah, I'll vote for Ejiofor as Black Panther. And get that kid from "Attack the Block" who looks like Denzel to play Blade in a origins reboot. Thanks!

  • Solaam | June 6, 2012 1:47 AMReply

Chiwetel Ejiofor is imperative for this role... along with a good script.

  • Justin Kownacki | June 6, 2012 12:25 AMReply

Who should play him? Chiwetel Ejiofor gets my vote. He's due for a high-profile lead.

But what the fuck is an urban audience? They dont want rural citizens watching their films?

  • Mark | June 6, 2012 12:19 AM

Yes, urban, like Woody Allen and Donald Trump who live in New York City. They are the target audience. ;-)

    My thoughts exactly

Id rather see a Luke Cage film than a Black Panther film in all honesty

  • MR. CYNICAL | June 6, 2012 12:00 AM

It's a whole lot less difficult to screw up a Luke Cage movie that's for sure, but a little underwhelming watching someone with those abilities beat up on local Harlem street punks. I think he's better suited as a supporting character in a grand scheme, unless his movie came off more like Shaft, which would be a good thing.

Blade was the FIRST Marvel character to be a breakout success. Marvel shouldn't forget that. Without Blade there would be no X-Men, Spider-man etc. Having said that the 3rd one was terrible and Wesley had to sue the studio over money from it, but I'm hoping Wesley will do a proper closure to the franchise once he is free.

Black Panther? I'll believe when I read it...probably at S&A

I hope they don't tarnish the hero's legacy and image like they did with Steel.

Steel didn't have much of a legacy in the first place.

Ok Marvel, you've gotten my attention, even as someone who's not a big comic book fan. But I love the idea of bringing Black Panther to the big screen. If it comes to fruition, hopefully it's treated with the same seriousness/depth as The Dark Knight trilogy, which I've loved thus far. And yes, I know Batman is a DC hero but my point still stands. :)

  • AccidentalVisitor | June 5, 2012 6:05 PMReply

The script will have to be great. The casting of the lead will have to be even better.

  • MR. CYNICAL | June 6, 2012 12:05 AM

You're absolutely correct. Sad part is, off the top I can't think of one suitable actor that fits the role well enough to stay true to the source material. Marvel would have to search long and hard for their lead, I hope the have the passion to commit to find the appropriate actor, and not just cast anyone like Terrence-Cry Baby-Howard playing James Rhodes (War MAchine). *Face-Palm*

is it just me or has everyone forgotten BLADE trilogy, which basically let folks and MARVEL they could make a good comic book film out of MARVEL characters... I know Wesley is in jail and stuff but those were good flicks (except for 3)... but I'm just saying

  • Curtis | June 5, 2012 5:50 PM

I don't think anybody's forgetting Blade. It's just been a minute. And the last one was terrible. Time for some freshness.

  • Josh | June 5, 2012 5:15 PMReply

Nice. Lets just avoid using an american with a bad accent, I'm looking at you Hallie Berry/Storm.

  • Mr. Cynical | June 5, 2012 11:53 PM

Thank you for addressing that. Last thing I wanna see is an A.American actor with a generic "Nigerian" accent.

  • HarveyDent | June 5, 2012 5:13 PMReply

Marvel is going BIG TIME after the urban film audience

Just made me grit my teeth
