BET continues its push towards more original scripted series with Young Man On Campus, a comedy pilot starring Jacob Latimore as a 15-year-old college prodigy and, as the title states, the youngest man on a college campus, who shares a dorm room with his basketball star cousin Marco.
Latimore and Eric D. Hill, Jr. as brother Marco, will be joined by Trishelle, the single (widowed) mother of the two boys, who'll be played by Terri J. Vaughn.
Trishelle is described as "an earthy mama bear who truly wants Jacob to have every advantage in life that she didn’t. She got a second job driving the campus bus at Mt. Pleasant five years ago to get an employee discount on her children’s tuition, and while Jacob got in on a scholarship, she keeps the job to keep an eye on him."
Also cast in the pilot episode are Dondre Whitfield as Prof. Derek Watson, who discovers Jacob's genius, and Vanessa S. Simmons as Aliyah, a "hot girl whom both Jacob and Marco have crush on."
Young Man On Campus was created by Jacque Edmonds Cofer (executive producer of Reed Between The Lines and Let's Stay Together - both BET shows).
This makes it the second new scripted series announced recently for BET's next season; the other being Mara Brock Akil’s drama Single Black Female which will star Gabrielle Union.
Competition is a good thing, as the black TV network space starts to get crowded...
