Tessa Thompson will co-star alongside British actor Tom Weston-Jones, and German actress Franka Potente in BBC America's first original scripted series, a drama titled Copper.

The new show, set in 19th century New York, will center on a young Irish police officer (played by Weston-Jones) who's assigned to work within immigrant communities, and of course much drama will ensue.

Tessa Thompson, who has done some TV work since her appearance in For Colored Girls, and has some 4 feature films at various stages of development, will play a character named Sara, described as a doctor's wife, whose brothers were lynched by a group of Irsih folks during a riot, and will do what she has to do to protect what's left of her family.

Potente will play a woman who runs a brothel and has a relationship with the Irish cop.

No word on when the series will debut on BBC America, so stay tuned.

shakey. black female lead with no black male lead? i guess the draw will be guessing how long will it be before the black lady and the irish cop revisit "monster's ball". that's not progress.

Finally. I've been waiting for Tessa to get some more high profiled work. Yay! Can't wait to see what she has to offer 2012.

Why is she described as "vengeful"? That's some bullshit. I've read it & she isn't "vengeful", she's "distrusting" & "cynical" when it comes to the Irish cop, a friend of her husband (who is black by the way). Makes her sound like an "angry black woman" or Lady Macbeth. Anyway, as for the show, it's okay, not a gangbusters script but a solid procedural.

I thought she was going to be the wife of Weston-Jones. She could have been the wife of the Irish cop. That used to happen quite a bit in 19th century, immigrant New York, to hear the historians tell it.
