Been a little while it seems since we posted any casting notices for Django Unchained; I guess the main black characters are already in the bag - Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson - and much of the rest of the casting that's been announced over the last sveral months, we don't really care about for obvious reasons :)

But then I saw this announced today...

Relative newcomer Daniele Watts has joined the ensemble cast of Quentin Tarantino's highly-anticipated and hotly-contested slave revenge narrative Django Unchained playing a relatively minor role as Coco.

It's been about 7 or 8 months or so since I read the script for Django Unchained, and so I honestly can't remember what character Coco is. Maybe those who have also read the script can help me out with that.

Regardless, this will be young Watts' big-screen debut - she's done mostly TV and shorts work before this, and her resume begins in 2008, so she's really just getting started. But she's also doen some theater work. I embedded her reel below, which I found on Vimeo.

Worth noting, and this only occured to me as I was watching her reel, is that Daniele co-starred in that dark, twisted melodramatic short film that sparked a sea of impassioned comments all over the web, wherever it was posted - The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.

Remember it? Sure you do! It was one of S&A's most popular posts in all of 2011!

Daniele's role in that was also peripheral, playing I believe the wife of the adult son who was molesting his father.

So she's going from appearing in one of the most talked about short films of 2011 to featuring in what will likely be one of the most talked about feature films in 2012, going into 2013.

And she'll be surrounded by some of the industry's top talents in front and behind the camera - of course, being directed by Tarantino, and co-starring alongside the aforementioned Foxx, Washington and Jackson, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and others.

Looking over her IMDB resume, I see that Daniele will also have parts in 2 other feature films scheduled to be released this year - 2 indies I'm not familiar with but will go research after this.

So it looks like she's one to watch in coming years. She's now officially on my alert list.

Wasn't "Coco" the French speaking maid who gave Django the low down on what was happening at the plantation?

  • Akimbo | January 14, 2012 10:52 AMReply

Been a fan of her theatre work for a while; she's got the goods. Awesome news.

Her roles are very diverse. Good luck to her!

I think Coco was Candy's top hoochie slave.

  • BluTopaz | January 14, 2012 11:36 AM

    "hoochie slave"?

don't yall sleep on this girl. saw her in a stage play called THE NEIGHBORS in LA doing some neo-minstrel. she was PHENOMENAL.

Ha, I don't think "challenging" is the word I'd use. The play thought it was deeper/smarter than it actually was and I thought the message was flawed. Daniele's solo was great, though.

@kimbo. i understand. play was a bit challenging on many levels. yet, the finale won me over. i must admit i am a fan. and danielle's historical dances solo??? bananas!!!

  • Akimbo | January 14, 2012 10:54 AM

I saw it, too! Was not a fan of the play, but there was no denying the talents of its cast.

saw her in a short film "Biggz The Movie," which appears at second 3:53 on her reel, and every second she was on screen was sheer perfection.

Thanks TAMBAY... I so appreciate the love :) You can see me on stage today in a free show-BEFORE THE REVOLUTION (closing out the pacific standard time performance and public art festival) at the Hammer Museum 2pm + 7pm .... Its a magically absurd story about what it might be like for a black ballerina (me) in the first ballet company in Russia around 1910.... sure to be provocative and offensive to some-- (especially when I paint myself white to perform a ballet about Marie Antoinette) but what is good art if it doesn't start conversation...?,0,7120518.story
If you come check it out-- be sure to say hi after the show :)
