Some theatre news of note on productions we've covered on S&A...

First, the good news... starting today, you can catch Tony Award-winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Emmy nominee Dulé HillMekhi PhiferTracie Thoms, and Condola Rashad on Broadway, in Lydia R. Diamond's play Stick Fly, which Alicia Keys is producing along with long-time Tyler Perry producer, Reuben Cannon, in a production directed by Kenny Leon (The MountaintopFences).

A quick recap... Stick Fly "chronicles the interactions and revelations within a well-to-do black family at its home in Martha’s Vineyard."

A longer description:

It was supposed to be a relaxing weekend at the family home on Martha’s Vineyard… until the baggage got unpacked. Set at the elegant summer home of the well-to-do LeVay family, Stick Fly begins when two adult sons bring their significant others (one a fiancée, the other a new girlfriend) home to meet their parents for the first time. Soon, secrets are revealed, civilities are dropped and identities are explored in a harsh new light. Race and rivalry, class and family, all come together for an explosive comedy of manners about today’s complex world.

Performance begin TONIGHT, although its official opening night celebration doesn't happen until December 8. You can purchase tickets via the play's website at www.StickFlyBroadway.com.

Secondly... the not-so-good news... across the pond... Thanks to lackluster reviews (primarily of her performance) and thus box office, Thandie Newton's West End debut in the first West End (London's equivalent of Broadway) revival of Death And The Maiden will close 3 weeks earlier than scheduled.

The production, which opened on October 24, will now close on December 31. It had previously been booked until January 21, 2012.

I am so excited for this. The play is an excellent family drama and I'm thrilled that it's going to Broadway. Not a Kenny Leon fan, but I lovelove Dulé Hill, Ruben Santiago Hudson, and Tracie Thoms.
