For those with HBO, tune in tonight at 9pm to watch director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders' Sundance 2012 documentary, About Face: Supermodels Then And Now, which features some of the most famous supermodels of all time, including the legendary Bethann Hardison (above-left; one of the first Black models for giants like Calvin Klein, and Oscar de La Renta, who helped guide the careers of future supermodels like Tyson Beckford, Iman and Naomi Campbell and is the first Black editor-at-large for Vogue Italia online); also featured in the documentary are former supermodels Beverly JohnsonJerry Hall, Christie Brinkley and others.

The women share their many personal stories of their years in the modeling industry, and other topics like: self esteem, plastic surgery, what goes on behind the scenes when the cameras aren't shooting, and open up about drug abuse, sexual harrassment and, of course, the "R" word, racism.

AS THE MODE OF FEMALE MODELS COME AND GO , IT SEEMS THAT THEY RE
A COMMODITY , NOW THERE SHOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY OF THE MALE MODELS , I THOUGHT THE HBO DOCUMENTARY OF THE FEMAL MODELS WERE DONE VERY WELL , WE AS MEN ONLY CONSIDER BEAUTY WHEN A GIRL IS YOUNG , BUT WHEN BEAUTY FADES , WE MEN LOOK TOWARDS YOUNGER WOMEN . NOT WOMEN WHO HAVE AGED GRACIFULLY . AS FOR MYSELF I JUST TURNED 60 AND DON'T LOOK IT , OF COURSE A WOMAN SAY HE HANDSOME AND GOODLOOKING AND AGED WELL . BUT FOR A FEMALE A MAN WOULD SAY SHE PASS HER PRIME . SHE'S HIT THE SKIDS . SO IN SOCIETY THAT MATURE WOMEN DON'T GET THE BREAKS AS THEY SHOULD , AND THE MATURE QOMAN IS ENYINESS OF A YOUNGER GIRL . WE IN AMERICA DON'T CHERISH OUR OLDER AND MATURE MEN AND WOMEN , IN EUROPE THEY ARE RESPECTED AND TREATED LIKE ROYALTY . I SUPPOSED WE'RE SO YOUTH ORIENTED , ITS SHAMEFUL , I HOPE AMERICA WAKES UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE , BECAUSE BEING MATURE AND OLD IS THE BEST REVENGE BECAUSE YOU PAID YOUR DUES , AND THE NEXT GENERATION , I DON'T KNOW IF THEY SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
BETWEEN ALL THE TEENAGE SUICIDES , I HOPE THE GENRATION AFTER THIS ONE WILL LEARN THAT BEING OLD IS A GIFT NOT A HINDERANCE . IT WHEN ALL LIFE BEGINS AND CALLED INVESTMENT YEARS TO BANK ON.

In the picture of the five models that loaded on this page who is the one to the far left? She is not mentioned in the text of the results I've found and I can't remember her name. thanks!

My wife was watching this in bed last night-- while I was trying to sleep! It seemed pretty interesting, though. There was another model of color, whose name I didn't catch, who told an interesting story about surviving the industry, while raising a family on her own. I'll be catching it on-demand.

I don't have HBO, but Beverly's reality show on OWN really was interesting.

Thanks. I always wanted TV One or someone to do a miniseries about Black models. There were so many dominating the fashion world between the 1970s-1990s. They really have interesting stories. From the runway queens like Naomi Campbell and Sonia Cole, to models huge in print/endorsements like Veronica Webb and Brandi Quinones; no one hears much about Mounia or Khadija Adams, though they served as muses for one of the biggest designers in fashion.

That is a great idea for a project. I subscribed to Elle magazine back in the eighties because every single issue had a photo spread with the lovely Karen Alexander. I remember seeing Mounia who you noted also, modeling for YSL. It's incredible that those were the best days for Black models.
