Principal photography on Ka'ramuu Kush's short film And Then...winner of the 3rd Shadow And Act Black Filmmaker Challenge, wrapped in April, in Los Angeles, and the completed film will debut shortly; however, to whet your appetite for what's to come, here's your first good look at the film via its first trailer.

To recap, And Then... is...

... a "coming of womanhood" story that deals with one woman's confrontation of issues surrounding body image, communication, and the psychology of sex. The film is about the discovery of feminine power and the healing that follows.

It was co-written by Ka'ramuu and the inimitable Aisha Hinds (Detroit 187HawthorneAssault On Precint 13), stars Diandra LyleVanessa Williams (Soul Food) and Ka'ramuu himself, and, by the way, with a score from none other than Me'Shell Ndegeocello.

Congrats to the cast and crew as the last leg of the production journey comes to a close; I'm looking forward to seeing the full film.

And for those who've been asking when the next S&A Films Black Filmmaker Challenge will happen, likely not until the fall; we want to see the last 2 through distribution/exhibition first; so stay tuned.

For those just joining us, in short, the S&A Films Black Filmmaker Challenge is a contest in which S&A Films funds a short film by a black filmmaker, based on a script selected from eligible entries. There've been 3 of them thus far (Nikyatu Jusu's Black Swan Theory, Rod Gailes' Soft Focus, and Ka'ramuu Kush's And Then...), with the long-term goal being to eventually start funding feature films.

I dig it. Can't wait to see the final product!

Loving me some Ka'ramuu Kush. But, can't figure out for the life of me what this thing is about other than one man and several women...if that's the intent, then you got it. Otherwise, give me a few more details. That said, the imagery is nice and I'd give it a 2nd chance with a better story in the trailer.

I find it workable...The video and the recap move in two different directions. If Ka'ramuu Kush and S&A weren't behind this, I'm not sure if this would receive such attention. However, I will keep an eye out for more updates...

I dug it. No it doesn't tell what the film is about. I get that. But I happen to know the quality of the work of Kush and that dude is brilliant. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. Major props to Shadow and Act–truly my favorite blog–for putting this contest on.

I don't know if this is a teaser but I think it looks good aesthetically. Aside from the petty criticism, this makes me think about the art of cutting trailers. Should they stand on their own as mini-movies, or is it ok a written synopsis is needed to explain it. Because we see these on the Internet we're accustomed to having a ton of accompanying information. Re: "And Then..." attractive people and a sexy soundtrack are not enough to make me want to watch even just a short film. However the recap text accompanying the video makes the plot VERY intriguing, and inspires me to see it.

Bump the dumb sh*t from the crabs below. Much respect to S&A for giving black film-makers a voice and a chance.

"It's about, impressions, mood, atmosphere"... "had a nice vibe to it". Yes, they did a good job of setting a tone. "Rough crowd!". Yes...always. "lame trailer" ..."The acting is really bad". Do not agree. Lame? How? Why? The acting? Well, there was only a few instances which required great "acting" talent, so I can't pull the trigger on that. Actors at this level seem to have a propensity to overact the smallest lines and -- sometimes -- subtlety eludes them... but in this clip, I believe they did an excellent job of conveying a thought or an emotion/feeling in the scenes that didn't require "conversation". Also, the music was "right"... it was tight... it fit... it set a nice comfortable tone. "Appears to have been shot & cut well". Agreed. In short, they're working with something.

Looks wonderful to me, I loved the mood and feel to it -the mystery

This is a teaser, not a trailer. It's about, impressions, mood, atmosphere and a glimpse into the characters world.

    Seems interesting to me…

    Rough crowd!

Based on the previous comments I expected dread, however, the piece had a nice vibe to it. Appears to have been shot & cut well. Looks interesting...

Looks just fine to me. Enough of a tease to tickle my interest and want to see more.

This is what won? Come on! The acting is really bad...lame trailer. geeze. This being a Shadow and Act production puts a spin on everything posted here.

  • WOW | August 20, 2012 5:36 PM

C'mon Turner, if you do not qualify your "criticism" you will be dismissed as someone who drives by spouting nonsense and thus, should not be taken seriously. So please tell us which actors were "bad" and in which portion of the clip? As another commenter mentioned, there wasn't enough acting to come to that conclusion. Also, would you agree with any of the other -- positive -- comments? What exactly are you talking about?

  • turner | August 20, 2012 5:09 PM

@Akimbo-Don't need glasses to see when sub par work is given a pass, more is yet to come.

  • Akimbo | August 20, 2012 12:55 PM

You certainly scored yourself several pairs of dick-tinted ones, though. Yes, the trailer was bad, but honestly, there wasn't enough acting for me to form a strong opinion on that element. If my mild disagreement upsets your delicate sensibilities, then oh well.

  • turner | August 20, 2012 11:34 AM

@Akimbo- "I thought the acting was fine" I give up. Guess I missed out on the rose colored glasses giveaway.

  • Akimbo | August 20, 2012 11:07 AM

I thought the acting was fine, and that braided hair-style was really cute, but the trailer tells you absolutely nothing about the movie. They're dating, she has a friend, she takes pictures and he? Is a masseur? Plays with dead bodies? If he's a serial killer, you have my attention. Otherwise, a recut trailer tells me what the film is actually about is in order.
