Announced just moments ago... joining the already-cast Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails, Chronicle) in the indie drama titled Fruitvale, based the murder of 22-year old Oscar Grant who was fatally shot by BART police in Oakland, California, are Jordan's fellow Red Tails star Tristan Wilds and Melonie Diaz (whom I was first introduced to in the delightful Raising Voctor Vargas, and has remained steadily employed since then)
We already know that Jordan will play Grant; and Spencer will play his tough and protective mother.
Wilds will play Grant’s best friend, while Diaz will be the mother of his young child.
By the way, "Fruitvale" is the name of the station where the shooting of Oscar Grant took place.
The very topical project is being produced by Forest Whitaker and his Significant Productions partner Nina Yang, with first-timer Ryan Coogler making his feature debut.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in July.
And by the way, Twinkie Byrd, who I interviewed a couple of weeks ago, is the casting director on this project!
