Tyler Perry Taking Indefinite Break From Stage To Focus On 'Some Major Projects' (Like What?)

Tyler Perry

I don’t know if you remember this or not, but around 2005 I took off from touring my Madea plays for about 5 years. During that time, I was working mostly on movies and TV shows. Well, as much as I love to be out on stage and doing a live Madea show, the time has come again for me to take a long break from the stage. I have some major projects that I'm working on that will require a lot of my time and effort. Just know that I did not want to stop this tour until I had hit as many cities as possible. So I'm going to finish out this Fall leg of the tour and then take a long break.

Words from Tyler Perry in a message to his fans via his website, today.

So, he's taking a long break from the stage, much to the chagrin of his fans I'm sure.

You'll recall that I've long wondered how in the world he balances all the varied projects he seems to work on simultaneously, in TV, film and stage. I suppose he wants to do as much as he can, while he can; although it all seems to be catching up with him, as he's now taking an extended break (who knows, maybe it'll be a permanent one) from one of his cash-cows.

Of course, reading the above quote, the sentence that caught my attention was: "I have some major projects that I'm working on that will require a lot of my time and effort."

So... what could these "major projects" he mentions be? Immediately, I remembered that he was launching his own TV network, although no word on when exactly it'll make its debut. However, I'm sure that's quite a load to carry, as he builds and preps for it.

What else? He did say in an interview at the end of June that he was working on a sci-fi movie at the time, after expressing disappointment with Prometheus. Although he didn't say what we can expect from his planned adventure into sci-fi. But that could also certainly be a major project, as sci-fi films tend to be.

What else? Dancing With The Stars alum William Levy revealed about a month ago that he'll be starring in an upcoming Tyler Perry movie - a romantic comedy, that he said would begin shooting in September. However, less than a month from September, there has been no official announcement of a project.

And looking over his IMDBPro page, the only definite project listed that Perry has yet to shoot is Take My Wife, which was announced last year, and which he's supposed to star alongside Dwayne "The RockJohnson. The story centers on a recently-divorced man who tries to avoid paying alimony, by grooming another dude to become his ex's new husband. Tyler Perry is listed as writer and director as well; although it's not known which of the 2 men he'll play.

Something tells me we're going to be hit with an unexpected project announcement from Mr Perry in coming months, with Alex Cross opening in October.

Any other guesses? Anyone know something we don't?

WOW a lot of haters of Tyler Perry here but Madea`s Witness Protection has made over $64 million dollars at the box office. Regardless whether people like Tyler or hate him he delivers at the box office. Tyler is the most consistent African American male at the box office right now.

Also, the Alex Cross movie is a change of pace for Tyler he is out of drag and his character is a masculine black man. So I think people should be crediting Tyler for taking a risk.

All jokes aside when I read he was coming to town in a new Madea play I applauded him for not forgetting where he came from. No one in his financial status has to be going around the country doing plays unless they want to. I applaud him for that. And I also really liked 'Good Deeds'.

I'm pretty sure of those projects is gender re-assignment.

  • Jye | August 14, 2012 9:59 AM

That was uncalled for Adam Scott Thompson. If you cant say something nice or positive you should stay off this site. We have enough people putting black brothers down, we don't need one of our own doing it on our own platform.

He should just do an all-out Madea action movie, complete with guns and bloodshed.

  • other song | August 13, 2012 9:41 PMReply

    Madea in Space.

If he's smart, Madea will go to China....and sing lots of karaoke.

He's probably taking a break for:
    1. Creation of his network
    2. Discussion about an Alex Cross sequel (if the first one does well)

All you haters below me: you do know he is making money right? Why should he stop what he is doing when the public seems to be eating it up? The fans have spoken with their dollars.

  • Miles Ellison | August 13, 2012 8:23 PMReply

If only he would take an indefinite break from directing movies. Or acting in them. Or writing them.

I actually heard that him and Omar Epps have a future project coming out. I was reading about the season finale for "House" and I read that Omar maybe working with Tyler Perry, stranger things have happened. Considering Omar hasn't been in a commercial film since 2004, he made need Tyler Perry help to get his film career back on track. He did a small indie with Sticky Fingz in 2009 but that about it.

@ D.C.: Interesting. Years ago Omar was on the career path that Anthony Mackie is now on.

I hope he surprises us and leaves.

  • Jye | August 14, 2012 10:02 AM

Katie, yet another hater. One of the few blacks we have trying to elevate other black actors and actresses and all you can say is something negative about the man. Pe0ple like you sicken me.

  • the devil | August 13, 2012 5:52 PMReply

tambay for the moment he's over here helping me wax my backside... that's a major project in and of itself. we can't be exploiting the blacks always, can we? although its not like we havent tried, but, you know what i mean.
