Over a year ago, March 2011 to be exact, I posted an item that said singer/actor Tyrese Gibson was developing a feature film on the life of the late singer Teddy Pendergrass, with Gibson himself playing the lead.

According to him "I am playing Teddy Pendergrass," and went on to say that his dream director for the project was "Lee Daniels, ’cause he’s from Philadelphia and he’s raw, knows how to tell the truth about characters and layers. He knows how to get people to go there. That would be my ideal situation. Lee Daniels would hit it out of the park. It’ll be my first time singing in a movie.

And further: “I’ve actually stayed away from movie roles where they want me to be a producer and the studio telling the singer or rapper what to do in a vocal booth. Nope. That’s what I do for a living. I don’t want to do a movie doing it... But Teddy Pendergrass, that’s different. I was there. I was there during the last days of him being on this earth. He said to my steppops, he told me himself, 'I don’t want nobody else in this world to do this movie but you.' At first it was an opportunity, now it’s a responsibility.”

But since then, nothing more has been heard about the project, until last week, when Gibson tweeted: "I have officially secured the life rights to the life story of Teddy Pendergrass, my inspiration. This movie will be made..."

No other details were given. But until then, one question, are you interested in seeing this film if it gets made?

I SAY IF THIS LATE GREAT SINGER, TEDDY PENDERGRASS WANTS TYRESE TO PLAY HIM IN THIS MOVIE, THEN LET HIM. YOU CANT GO AGAINST SOMEONE'S WISHES BECAUSE THEY ARE NO LONGER HERE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. IF TYRESE CAN PLAY IN "FAST AND THE FURIOUS", THEN HE CAN PLAY TEDDY PENDERGRASS. WE DONT KNOW WHAT WAS SAID BETWEEN THE TWO BEFORE TEDDY'S PASSING, ONLY GOD KNOWS WHAT WAS SAID BETWEEN THE TWO. STOP DOUBTING SOMEONE'S CREDENTIALS AND GIVE SOMEONE THE PROPS THEY DESERVE. A PERSON DOESNT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE THAT DECESED PERSON IN ORDER FOR THE MOVIE TO BE GOOD, ITS THAT DECEASED PERSON'S SPIRIT THAT SHOWS WHAT THAT INDIVIDUAL WAS LIKE BEFORE PASSING. ANSWER THIS: DID JENNIFER LOPEZ LOOK LIKE SELENA PEREZ? NO, BUT THROUGH LOPEZ SINGING SELENA'S SONGS THE WAY SHE PERFORMED THEM MADE SELENA LOOK LIKE SHE WAS ACTUALLY THERE EVEN SHE HAS BEEN GONE FOE 19 YEARS IN MARCH 2014. AND JAMIE FOXX DIDNT LOOK LIKE RAY CHARLES, BUT HE PLAYED RAY CHARLES TO THE MAX! SO GIVE TYRESE A BREAK. WHEN YOU SEE THE MOVIE AND YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, THEN YOU CAN SAY WHATEVER YOU WANT. DONT JUDGE ANYBODY IF YOU DONT WANT SOMEONE TO JUDGE YOU! TYRESE WOULD DO A GREAT JOB AND HIS STEP-POPS WOULD BE VERY PROUD OF HIM!!!!

Great news but Hell no. tyrese got that ghetto thing going, whereas teddy got that sophistication going, just based of that, tyrese is out of that league. I'd prefer they look for a lead other than tyrese! Tyrese does not come even close to looking like late Teddy pendergrass, he is nice looking but not as great looking, he is more like Teddy underdog, with teddy being the Alpha dog, Find an alpha male who could play that role to perfection.. Pick any tall, thin man with style and dark skin who can wear a bear and let him play Teddy. Tyrese you still can be the executive produce but nigga please don't star in that movie, you'd destroy it!!!

It must be Morphine these singing divas(ie:Aretha,Mary j,Tyreese) are downing with their Kool Aid, b/c its almost a after thought, that these phylons insist on bogarting their respective pipe dreams into the lexicon of the unsubspecting masses, hell no!.

LOL - to those before me that are haters, there's still hope for you ;-) I'm not even a Tyrese fan, but say CONGRATULATIONS! I've always thought his acting chops were stronger than his singing, but his passion is really for music. I'm down w/ Donella and believes that with proper direction that he could pull it off. Getting it made, it the film game... he just announced he got the rights, could take ten years before production even starts. Tyrese today as Teddy, Maybe... Tyrese as Teddy in 10 years, I think so

Pendergrass had hair and talent. Although I dread the idea of Tyrese wearing fake fros, I dread even more the idea of him singing Pendergrass' songs. Look, if the script is not any good, if there isn't a great hook, if Tyrese wants to tell the story of Pendergrass simply because he is a big fan, then I don't see the point of doing this movie. Second of all I doubt Lee Daniels is even seriously considering this. That sounds more like Tyrsese's dream scenario. Lastly this movie probably has less of a chance of being made than that Luke Cage film that Tyrese and John Singleton have been threatening to do for almost six years.

I agree with you that Tyrese would not be a great pick or lead for this movie, I would watch but it would not feel like this is teddy's story. The whole ghetto thuggish vibe will kill the memory of teddy. He better find an actor with similar charisma than Teddy for the role, well articulated, well dressed, who can sing and wear a bear like teddy. But what about the story make it relevant for his fan. Is it him telling a story of being a womanizer yet truly being involved with man and how he was lead to it, maybe due to the fact that he never knew his father or was maybe forced to date one of those big exec in order to remain in the business. What is it about that story that make it one everybody should know about? What is the message teddy wanted us to know. Is it one of money, fame, good looks and women do not lead anywhere, all that all is vanity. What is about that story that make it so relevant!! hope tyrese get some great writer who can tell a story to bring to life!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark | April 18, 2012 6:52 PMReply

So, will he play Teddy as a gay man or straight-washed man?

  • Henry | January 9, 2013 8:50 PM

Teddy was not gay fool!!! giving a ride to that transvestite does not make him gay, they were rumors, stop spreading them around. Why are you trying to kill the man reputation with your distorted spirit. And even if he was bisexual and liked butter on his toast, who cares, it's the music that matters and he never admitted to liking men or having been with them, you need to check yourself bro!!!

  • Darkan@sbcglobal.net | April 18, 2012 6:38 PMReply

Please God, don't let it be. SMDH.

  • Henry | January 9, 2013 8:51 PM

Why are you so against it?? and what has God to do with it?

  • Donella | April 18, 2012 4:06 PMReply

I'm happy for Tyrese. He worked long and hard to get the project to this point. I'm hopeful that the passion will come through in his performance. About Lee Daniels, he managed to pull an understated performance from Cuba Gooding Jr for Shadowboxer. I've no doubt, he'll provide strong direction for Tyrese.

  • Cordell | April 18, 2012 3:21 PMReply

Why???? Just be happy producing the film. I don't think he can pull this off.

  • TimeWillTell | January 27, 2013 11:33 PM

Jamie Fox pulled it off in "Ray" !!!

  • Henry | January 9, 2013 8:58 PM

Exactly my point Cordell!! I think he should just produce it and leave the playing to an actor like Dennis Haysbert, if this one was like 20 y.o younger , a man's man, masculine, sophisticated and refined with great charisma like Teddy. Tyrese is too rough up, thuggish, with a ghetto vibe, he does not have that degree of sophistication that were found among the man of they 70's and 80s,. He would misrepresent teddy. hell they need to have an open call for a teddy look alike!! Please tyrese if you read it, we're not hatting, or trying to tell you not tell the story but just don't be in it as the lead character, just produce it!!!
