There hasn't been much news on this film since our last post on this, in December 2010. As far as I know, the sales and production team behind it are negotiating release deals and dates, so it really hasn't screened very much since its worldwide debut at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival last October.

Titled A Man's Story, and centered on charismatic Ghanaian-born Savile Row designer, Ozwald Boateng, who has outfitted men like Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Spike Lee, Brad Pitt, Chris Rock, Daniel Day Lewis, Don Cheadle, Forest Whitaker, Russell Crowe, Wesley Snipes, and countless others.

The film, 12 years in the making (by director Varon Bonicos who has been filming Boateng since 1998 – he opened his first Savile Row shop in 1994, at age 34), is both a professional and personal profile of Boateng, focusing on his business, his design process, and his private life.

“… hard-working and very humanly flawed, Boateng’s personal and professional triumphs and set-backs are the fascinating heart of this film which is set against a back-drop of models, movie stars and fabulous locations… Boateng is also fascinating from a sociological perspective. As a black and heterosexual man, he breaks the stereotypes of the fashion industry,” says a write-up of the film on Britfilms.com.

And on-top of suiting up the elite, Boateng has done quite a bit of wardrobe design for films you have all seen, like The Matrix, Tomorrow Never Dies, Oceans 13, and a few others.

I should also mention that Ozwald’s appreciation for cinema has inspired him to write and direct as many as 10 short films, none of which I’ve seen thus far, though I've searched for them, and none appears to be available online. But I'll continue to dig...

Announced this morning, via the documentary's Facebook page, the 90-minute film will make its official UK premiere at the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival, which runs from June 8th through the 12th. So, those of you across the pond will get your first chance to see A Man’s Story; and I hope you will come back here and report your reactions/response to the film afterward.

I'm glad a Ghanaian born whom I bare the same name with, has chalked this prestigious feet nternationally!
Is there a way I could join his team of glamorous models as an amateur, since I have a strong passion for modelling in exquisite outfits like his?

This is just the type of film a young black man should see, an alternative to, but also with the style of the gangster. We need to see how we influence the world. This man dresses to impress the greatest celebrities and heads of state on this planet. He took an influence, controlled it, focused it and now that same influence(ARMANI) is saying Boatengs style comes from A POWER WITHIN. AMAZING STORY!

I STILL want a Boateng suit. His cuts are off the chain! This is a doc I definitely want to see.

Now this looks like something I'd want to see. Another project in the UK I don't have access to. Maybe it'll show on PBS eventually... or OWN?
