Knowing a crowd pleaser when they see one Universal Pictures, Escape Artists production company and Illumination Entertainment (who produced Despicable Me) have bought the rights to make a film about gospel singer Vy Higginsen and her program for teens, to help young people develop, foster and continue the tradition of gospel music.

Vigginsen and her program, which were recently profiled on 60 Minutes, got more that she bargained for when she discovered that many of the teens have serious dysfunctional family problems, with absent or addicted parents, which made them feel worthless. That encouraged Vigginsen to help her young students deal, and come to grips with their problems. Once she was able to do that, her students soared.

The script for the project will be written by Stephen Belber who is currently adapting the book Why Should White Guys Have All The Film to star Jamie Foxx.

Todd Black, the head of Escape Artists, who got the project rolling, said he was inspired after seeing the 60 Minutes segment, and that it would be a great subject for film. And since he also produced The Pursuit of Happyness, which was made after after Black saw a 60 Minutes segment on Chris Gardner, he must have figured that lighting could strike twice.
