Viola Davis, who most recently attracted attention for her upcoming role as a Mississippi maid in The Help, will soon be traveling to Pittsburgh to star in the film Still I Rise.
In the film, Davis will portray a mother and middle school teacher who teams up with another woman to transform a local school. The original story is unrelated to the Maya Angelou poem of the same name.
Walden Media executive Mylan Stepanovich said of Ms. Davis, "She's fantastic. We're very lucky" to have her play a lead role in the film, opposite another female lead which has yet to be announced.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late May and wrap in mid-July. Daniel Barnz (Beastly) is set to direct.

No matter how they put their best effort forward to 'ugly' her up, she always gives 100%!
And then she sashays down that red carpet for her premieres and shows the world how beautiful & gorgeous she is!
She's an ebony queen! Thank you Mrs. Viola Davis for rising above!!

Agreed. She IS the truth.
And she was in Solaris? How'd I miss it (forget it)? *to-rent again*

I gotta be the third co-signer on that one. Zeus, you & Dankwa hit the nail on the head with that one. In her tv stuff, she's a plain jane detective or in SOLARIS she was an astronaut captain, but everything else, they "Oprah" the hell outta her & go supah dupah raw & ugly LOL As much as that gets on my last nerve, she NEVER gives a bad performance. Viola is the truth.

She is such a good looking woman. Why do producers always want to 'ugly' her up for the projects she does?
