Warrington Hudlin Presents 'The Black Kung Fu Experience' Screening At MoMI (NYC) Today

Fist and Sword is the Museum of the Moving Image's ongoing popular series of contemporary and classic martial arts and action movies, curated by, none other than, Mr Warrington Hudlin.

"The martial arts film is the world's most popular cinematic genre. There were once at least half a dozen cinemas in New York City where we could regularly see these films. Alas, the Sun Sing Theatre, the Music Palace, the Pagoda Theater, the Rosemary Theatre, the Canal Street Cinema, and the Bijou Theatre have all closed their doors. This series at Museum of the Moving Image is reconstituting this community of film enthusiasts and allows us to once again enjoy these films on the big screen."–Warrington Hudlin

And screening as part of the series, here in NYC (Queens, specifically) today, on Monday, January 21, 2013, at 2pm is The Black Kung Fu Experience - a film we've profiled in the past on this site.

Directed by Martha Burr and Mei-Juin Chen, the 57 minute documentary...

... chronicles black pioneers, including famous actors and lesser-known practitioners, who became respected masters in a world dominated by Chinese and white men, and created a junction for African American and Asian cultures. The Black Kung Fu Experience traces the rise of black kung fu in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, and then reconnects with the contemporary martial arts scene at the 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple, legendary birthplace of kung fu.

Admission is free WITH museum admission fee, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Museum members may reserve tickets in advance by calling 718-777-6800.
