Last written about in September, when it was announced that the film would be the Dutch submission in the Best Foreign Language Oscar category...
It's called Sonny Boy - a film that tells the true story of the "forbidden" relationship between Waldemar Nods, a 19-year-old student from Suriname, and Rika van der Lans, a married Dutch woman in her 40s, and mother of 4 children.
The pair meet in the 1920s, fall in love, and Rika becomes pregnant soon thereafter, causing a scandal with far-reaching consequences, leading up to World War II.
The film, directed by Dutch director Maria Peters, is based on a novel of the same name, written by Annejet van der Zijl.
Released in The Netherlands in January this year, I don't believe Sonny Boy has recived much exposure here in the USA yet (according to IMDB, it screened at the Stony Brooks Film Festival in July, and nothing else since then); I just learned that it'll next screen at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which starts in about a week, running from January 5th through the 16th.
And along with that festival screening announcement comes the film's first full trailer, and unlike its teaser which we posted months ago, this full trailer is actually subtitled, and embedded at the bottom of this post.
It's worth noting that the name "Sonny Boy" is a nickname the couple gave to their son, who's till alive today, at 81 years old; they got the name from the Al Jolson song that was released the year that they met.
I should also note that this is the second relatively unknown European film we've written about this year (the other being the French/Belgian feature The Invader) that will screen at the Palm Springs International Film Fest this month. There might be others, and I'll know for sure when I go through the entire lineup list. I won't be attending the festival, but I'll see about getting someone who is attending to get us some reviews.
