Remember the conversation starter that was her Windows Seat music video in 2010? Well, wait till you get a load of this :)

Note that while she's clearly nude in the bathtub, the more revealing body shots belong to someone else; and, oh yeah, it's NSFW.

Let the analyses begin:

I'm SHOCKED that others are SHOCKED of this video. She has ALWAYS pushed the needle way over the line. I do see the art in the video. For me it showcased birth from conception to delivery. I thought it was beautifully done.

  • Dario Western | June 10, 2012 4:39 AMReply

We need more music videos like this. Honestly, a lot of you are being a bunch of prudes! Sex sells pop and rock music. As for this video being offensive - I think Jenna Rose, Rebecca Black, Justin Bieber and The Wiggles are responsible for far more offensive and ghastly rubbish that's being foisted on a pop music audience. Grow up!

  • sigh | June 8, 2012 7:01 AMReply

Don't shame her for being overtly sexual. Conversely, don't shame her for deciding she is uncomfortable with being overtly sexual.

It's not up to any of you what she does with her body or her image.

Also, stop feigning outrage over a couple of ass slaps and some cherry syrup. Sex is a part of human nature, get over yourselves.

Had no intention of watching this vid (don't like the song and the fighting was annoying), but since it doesn't seem to be going away, I finally did. With respect to my high intellect, exclusive education, and discriminating tastes, I have this to say on the matter: THAT WAS GROSS.

  • irving parks | June 7, 2012 2:06 PMReply

I really dug this until the final part where it looked like she had taken a huge facial and was covered in white spooge. I think maybe that is the part that may have thrown her over the edge and made her go off and claim this was only a rough cut. If you don't want it on film, don't film it. She made a bad decision and now she wants to blame them.

  • Cristo | June 7, 2012 1:52 PMReply

if i was Tambay, i would remove this video from my vimeo account, just to have a clean conscience and not partake in what might be enabling degradation of someone else. *just saying*

  • Deana | June 7, 2012 1:41 PMReply

From an artistic standpoint, I can see clearly that this is an unfinished product. I'm sure that once released in it's intended form, it will be very beautiful and thought provoking. That is, if your mind does not immediately go to the gutter. You know who you are...

I'm always happy to see the Black female form in all it's natural beauty portrayed in mainstream media, as it rarely happens. People need to stop inflicting their religion, beliefs, politics and morals on others but I guess that's the American way. The slaves no longer need the masters as we have learned to enslave ourselves.

  • Donna | June 7, 2012 12:35 PMReply

This is not my Erica, so i know she didn't have the chance to see this before hand. They used a body double, but still she need to sue them. This is crazy. I love Erica and always will.

  • D.S. | June 7, 2012 11:47 AMReply

Dissappointed. I've always loved her music and creativity. But this was tasteless and very very disappointing.

  • sly | June 7, 2012 11:39 AMReply

So what's the issue here? Isn't her absolute right to explore artist vision or push boundaries? Why does everything have to be controversial? Nobody has forced any of us to view this video. How is this any different then how Grace Jones use push the envelope?

  • Louise | June 7, 2012 11:10 AMReply

Although not particularly my taste, and no one can beat Roberta Flack's version imo, I thought the video was fine up until about 4 mins! I don't need to explain further if you have seen it!

However, her sister who did the nude scenes must have known how it would look like, so why did she allow it to continue if she was so offended?

Flaming lips....always one to push boundaries....not this gives them an excuse to produce this!

  • Norman | June 7, 2012 8:47 AMReply

What the hell was that?? Yea I mean words to the song? Purpose of video? He can love for women but his vision of art in this video show that he has no vision. Damn shame..on the up side Erykah and her sister fine as hell though..

  • Jason | June 7, 2012 8:24 AMReply

This video makes no sense whatsoever but I do enjoy the ass slaps. I now see why Badu is so upset and I would be too if someone released a video where my sister looked like she just did a Bukkake porno scene. Badu's videos can be abstract but you can usually decipher some sort of meaning or relevance of what's done. This was more masturbation material than artistry.

  • moriquenda | June 7, 2012 8:12 AMReply

Wow...it's clear that the "Flaming Lips" have no love for women. This is just sad.

  • Jaye Dubious | June 7, 2012 6:04 PM

    @moriquenda...
"You know, I was just thinking the same thing. This imagery is super chauvinistic! The slaps on the ass, the semen-like substance. Glitter, Blood, and Semen... Money, Death, and Sex!"

  • David | June 7, 2012 4:45 AMReply

I think Erykah pissed off some people with that video involving blue-blood regarding JFK's death, (the statement that video really made for those that can read between the lines) so they used this opportunity to smear her name by making her seem like she is into the occult/esotericism, to ruin her image. She should know better about who to work with, the level of weirdness in this video makes Gaga look like nothing.

  • Jay | June 7, 2012 2:16 AMReply

I watched the video before Erykah's response: disgusted and confused. Watching it after her response: not confused, still utterly disgusted -- even more than before. This video, knowing now that these images don't represent any particular message of the artist's intention(s), is TERRIBLE. Displaying such vivid and stark nudity drenched in what appears to be semen and blood, rubbing it in? How did Nayrok (Erykah Badu's little sister) feel shooting these scenes? What impression was she under about how the footage would be used? I actually cannot imagine a way in which I could be shown this naked woman rubbing and licking "cum" off of her breasts and face while smiling while fully dressed [white] men are standing around fully clothed and non-objectified, but there's nothing new there for the popular male/female pop-culture dynamic. My apology for the long-winded response but this video is gross --ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. It's 100% disgusting and deplorable. Putting an image/graphics over a green screen is MUSIC VIDEO 101 -- they coulda done that -shit I coulda done that -- even a background might have given rise to the argument that this video has an artistic appeal. Everything: the nudity, the DISGUSTING bodily fluid shots contrasted with the sick way Nayrok is portrayed as relishing in the goodness of it all: it's an epic fail all the way around.

I don't give 2 shyyts about the flaming lips, but I love me some Erykah Badu. Always have. Always will. This doesn't change my opinion of her 1 iota. Clearly the "cooch" shots were of the other girl and not Erykah. In any event, the director obviously has some issues he's putting on for public display using EB for his own advancement. I don't appreciate that shyyt one dayum bit. EB's music catalog speaks for itself and her as an artist. There have been many female artists who have ridden her coattails, but none can touch her talent and vision. She's one of a kind. So I say, screw this dude for putting this nonsense out there exploiting her without her approval.

  • Twianag | June 6, 2012 11:36 PMReply

Video was tasteless!! I know Ms. Badu did not approve this!! Shame on u for releasing this tasteless work of art without her approval!!!

  • jan | June 6, 2012 11:35 PMReply

Anyone remotely familiar with Ms. Badu would certainly know that this is not the caliber of the vocals or the video she has always done. S**t happens. By no means will I even consider this as a EB production. I have always been and will remain steadfast as a EB fan. She certainly has always rep'd her art to the highest degree and I love her for the, and ill continue to support her. The nerve of some shisty a** thirsty MF,s, but we all know they are out there. This mess is only a memory. Delete!.... Moving right along.

So the name of the video is Modern Esotericism... ? or something like that... Kind of get it ironically the responses to it (if that is the name) show more about the modern response to spirituality than the video itself... kind of get it but some of the images are more disturbing or confusing than communicative... Im so not sure what is being communicated in many of them...

  • Edward Primus | June 6, 2012 11:01 AMReply

I have reserved comment until I read all the previous comments, some feel it was related to being a mother and the birth process, some have related it to a relationship, which means that the meaning is not clear which is the point of being an artist. What I also noticed is no one commented that she has these two European men in the video who are not musicians and don't seem to be connected to her in any way in the video. It seems Ms. Badu has also gone from being very Afro-Centric to being ? as the hair doesn't portray anything except a European mode; and I don't care how many weaves I see (as Gil-Scott Heron once said we don't care how nappy or straight or short as long as it's yours) it is longing for an image other than the one, one was born with. I also find that there are artistic ways of portraying things without being naked as it seems that REAL singers are not obsessed with how they look i.e. Aretha who we went to see if she was in shape or out, or Luther. Yet, it seems that we have a generation who is not that talented in the singing department so they make it up by being naked or in some form of semi-nudity so the focus doesn't become the song but their bodies.

  • NotThatGuy | June 6, 2012 2:17 PM

The two guys are Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd from the Flaming Lips, the band that's playing the music and who's album this song is on

  • Mokedwards | June 6, 2012 11:59 AM

I didnt get it either but I will continue to analyze it. The birth thing sounds like something a woman of Erykah's caliber would do. She has always been an advocate of womanisn, and motherhood. One thing to note is that I have seen this woman live three of four times. It's a show that should not be missed. You will never witness the full range and power of her voice until you see her live. She is amazingly talented and can play many different instruments. She is just as amazing as Aretha and Luther live and in concert. Just in a different way. Make no mistake this woman can sang but what she also does is provoke conversation. She always has and as a woman in this crazy world I applaud her.

I love Erykah's music...it makes me feels soulful and free...the video is a stretch for me though...I felt sort of disgusted like I was watching a beautiful and gifted woman degrading herself...call it art...call it porn...call it publicity stunt...call it REAL because beautiful and gifted women go out and degrade themselves every day on some ol' supply and demand BS...I hope she keeps it coming; )

  • Sharon | June 6, 2012 12:28 AMReply

okay, so thats her in her mother's belly and when she came out, she is showing birth to include the afterbirth, placenta blood, etc, etc. that's very deep. She has always centered around motherhood and creation of life. I had to watch it twice to get it though. Does anyone agree?

  • Woman Rising | June 6, 2012 2:01 AM

Sharon I'm still trying to get thru the shock/wow factor of the first time seeing it.. I haven't gotten thru the shock to form an opinion. I never expected to see her give a tour of her whole anatomy.

  • agreed | June 6, 2012 1:59 AM

Agreed, Sharon! A beautiful, artistic piece. I think it's sad that we can't look at a nude woman anymore without automatically sexualizing her. This is nowhere near porn, omg people.

I understand the school of thought that supports "not selling out" and not just creating what appeals to the masses. But I'm sorry. I KNOW I'm not the ONLY one that misses the OLD badu. In the book " The 48 Laws of Power" - one of the laws is "Think how you think, but act like everyone else". I think Badu should try that out. She's becoming increasingly connected to a smaller and smaller audience by these off-the-wall videos and publicity stunts. I'm miss her "I'm getting tired of yo shit...you don't never buy me nothin' " days...

this is nothing like being the shock value bullshit pop singers like lady gaga do. This is actually artistic. Erykah Badu has no interest in being mainstream, which I commend her for. Nor do the Flaming Lips, who are still fairly underground (although more people know them now).

I don't know how you could compare this to Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, who wouldn't dare do anything like this. They're not "avant-garde" or different, they're just pandering to the masses...Erykah Badu has NEVER done that.
