And Then... 1

As we promised... here is the online premiere of writer/director/actor Ka'ramuu Kush's short film And Then..., winner of the 3rd Shadow And Act Black Filmmaker Screenwriting Challenge, which made its World Premiere in both Los Angeles and New York City over a month ago.

Both screenings were very well attended, and we're pleased to say that the film was well received.

And now, we're hoping that the online premiere is just as "well-attended" and received by you folks... right now!

To quickly recap, And Then... is...

... a "coming of womanhood" story that deals with one woman's confrontation of issues surrounding body image, communication, and the psychology of sex. The film is about the discovery of feminine power and the healing that follows.

It was co-written by Ka'ramuu and Aisha Hinds, and stars Diandra LyleVanessa Williams (Soul Food) and Ka'ramuu himself, with a score by Prince Damons.

Cheryl L. BedfordSean O'Halloran and Kush are all producers on the project.

And if you haven't, read Jai Tiggett's thoughtful interview with writer/director Kush, Aisha Hinds, Diandra Lyle and Vanessa Williams HERE, to get some back story on the making of the film.

Congrats to the cast and crew as the last leg of this filmmaking journey begins, going into the distribution and exhibition phases.

The next S&A Films Black Filmmaker Challenge call for scripts will be announced possibly before the end of this year, although more likely early next year.

For those just joining us, in short, the S&A Films Black Filmmaker Challenge is a contest in which S&A Films (a production company created by Tambay Obenson and Rodney Parnther) fully finances and executive produces a short film by a black filmmaker, based on a script selected from eligible entries. There've been 3 of them thus far (Nikyatu Jusu's Black Swan TheoryRod Gailes' Soft Focus, and now Ka'ramuu Kush's And Then...), with the long-term goal being to eventually start funding feature films.

Now, watch Ka'ramuu Kush's And Then... in its entirety below, which is just over 30 minutes. I should note that it's NSFW:

Breathtaking....I was on the edge the entire film. I could so relate the lead female character in so many ways. Long exhale at the ending....yes, yes, yes!

I was kind of disappointed in the ending because I was craving more and more. Please extend this and make it into a full length feature because this was a teaser in my eyes and I loved it.

  • Hunee Luvs | September 24, 2013 7:03 PMReply

This was a very sexy film. Beautiful cinematography. I personally would have enjoyed a. extra 15 minutes of fleshing out the back story between the ladies. Hell...I wanted to see more in general! Awesome...bravo :-)

  • Tre M. | September 23, 2013 1:22 PMReply

Ka'ramuu Kush's film, And Then..., was thoughtful and provocative... aesthetically beautiful in terms of cinematography... the story unfolded very naturally, yet kept me in slight suspense all the while. Also, I could relate very well to the lead female character, as I'm sure many women could... the first tastes of sexual exploration--thrilling, yet scary all at once. Wonderful acting, too... the casting was off the chain--they were so beautifully placed in their roles.

I am left wanting more, Ka'ramuu.. it was sexy... HOT and titillating. I appreciate you for sharing your talent with the world. As I said, I am impressed. I hope you turn this into a full length movie.

    This movie is great

  • Dorian | September 16, 2013 4:37 PMReply

First of all the opening was really nice and got my attention... Beautiful Cinematography.
However, the conversations seemed a bit forced into the mood the director wanted instead of feeling natural. Seemed as if every word needed to "feel" deep. Which lost the colors of emotions and the authentic feel of realization by the characters.
Ultimately, I did not buy the end... I needed more real connection between the women. I did not want to hear about how much the couple talked about (the friend) I needed to see a conversation where we could sense that she really wanted to BE more (like) her. I needed to see that here man saw her envy (not jealously) regarding her... that we could understand why he went there with the friend.... because he "knew" that's what she really wanted... to cross THAT boundary of her own sexuality and freedom to express it.

Although beautiful to look at, I would not hang in the house.... the picture needs a better frame.

  • Shanea | September 14, 2013 6:21 PMReply

Yes, yes I really enjoyed this! And I LOVED the opening sequence. Nice work, Mr. Kush.

  • Shamar | September 13, 2013 7:29 PMReply

I am always amazed by your brilliance! So glad you put this story on film. It's beautiful, sensual sexy and REAL! All the things a woman should be! : ))

    The frickin' CINEMATOGRAPHY !!!!!!

    Yes. Yes. YES.

  • QUENTIN | September 13, 2013 2:44 PMReply

I thought we were in trouble when she started with with "Remember when..." I was thinking, "Here comes a world of exposition." But it smoothed out nicely with her, how should I say, "complaint." Then it goes teetering on this line between eventful and uneventful, making it take way too unnecessarily long to get to the supposed climatic end. Way too many moments felt self-indulged and pointless. The performances were great though, that's for sure. And the lead actress is so freaking hot. The quality of the production was superior but I would've liked for better cinematography (it looked like digital video, very glossy). But I feel this film takes itself way too seriously. Overall, it was okay. I enjoyed the sexual tension in it, but as a story, well, the story leaves much to be desired.

  • Stonz | September 13, 2013 12:00 PMReply

Yo KA, this movie goes hard. Great story, great acting, and great directing man. I will like to see more of this movie bro. Keep up the good work man.

...And Then - Observations and a study in Character...

Rain. Dance. As rain and dance are nouns that are also verbs, we see a stagnant, predictable, safe, Isis take a germ, a seed of an idea, water it, and eventually actualize it. August teaches. Baybee nurtures. Isis grows. Rain cleanses and heals and makes things grow. Too much rain can drown a thing, but in "And Then...", there ain't no drowning going on. Life, in essence, is a Dance. "And Then..." is a brilliant film that boldly digs under our cultural societal rug, pulls out a specific taboo, dusts it off, and provides a thought-provoking, titillating, eyebrow raising and most importantly, honest, perspective on sex and romance. Filmmaker Ka'ramuu Kush and Writer/Producer Aisha Hinds lovingly and delicately peel the layers of a relationship onion, which can be downright moody, and complex, yet affirming and fulfilling. Subsequently, there are no tears in this onion, just eye-watering joy, fused with mango juice, the likes of which I won't give away in this posting. The film is wonderfully artistic, and brings to mind a game-changing Spike Lee in the early days of his career. The subtle nuances throughout creep into your conscience in ways you don't realize until the end, if you do at all. I enjoyed the cinematography, the MOVEMENT of the film. It constantly moved forward, picking up pieces of story along the way, weaving a rich tapestry of desire, daring and emotion. Hard for me to believe the piece was 30 minutes, which flew by. I enjoy the way Kush takes his time with a scene. He allows you to take in the whole of it, by showcasing the little bits. An expression here, a gesture there. Simply genius. He riffs with dialog like a seasoned musician, taking you up and down a verbal roller coaster as you are held captive, by your own will. I enjoyed the parallels drawn with the play on opposite faces; August holds a client's face, he holds Baybee's face, Isis holds Baybee's face, and it's all so very intimate and inviting. I appreciate the film tonally, and I love the FUN the actors seemed to have with this piece. It resonates. All of the actors did a fantastic job in "showing", and not "telling", and oftentimes their expressions are priceless, telling a story in and of itself. I look forward to seeing more from this talented filmmaker. Now, I'm off to eat a mango of my own!

and Then! This is HOT! The cinematography, mix of photography, and dialogue spoke volumes!

I've seen and enjoyed some of Ka'ramuu Kush's other work. I wasn't expecting this and got more than I thought I could have experienced. Call it guilty pleasure -- I found myself smiling and waaay too engaged!

  • Mistress Susan | September 12, 2013 11:15 PMReply

What is there NOT to like about this film? As a dominatrix, I exposed to a lot of sex, but NOT Black Love and Intimacy! I love it! This erotica was done so tastefully. I am very much into diversity, but unlike white stories, I rarely see black on black sexy love. We definitely need more of these films. Job well done!

  • Kim | September 12, 2013 1:00 PMReply

FREEDOM...Courage to live your desire in all areas of life. This film is a wonderful creative expression of letting go. Just BE...FREE

  • Breeze | September 12, 2013 11:47 AMReply

What an amazing piece of Art. I thoroughly enjoyed this short film... so many layers. I have shared with several friends and it has sparked some interesting dialogue to say the least! Keep up the great work!

  • P. Armand | September 12, 2013 11:22 AMReply

Definitely a topic within sexual dialogue some are not willing to open up to with themselves, let alone, on camera, for all to see! Mr. Kush was provocatively probing. I enjoyed Ms. Lyle's performance immensely, especially watching the arc of her struggle towards the end. The still shots were exquisite and added a beautiful dimension. Thanks for the journey! Imaginations can only run wild now!

  • Keith Josef | September 12, 2013 9:26 AMReply

while i was watching... i kept thinking... this is some good stuff... but also the complexity... i'm really enjoying the story where black people are diving head-first into their complexity... yes, we have always been complex (intellectually, sexually, morally, socially), but YOU are putting that complexity center stage with quality and unapologetic authority. congrats, Ka'

  • Khadijah | September 12, 2013 8:31 AMReply

Damn And then... Is so sexy to say the least. I loved the cinematography, the acting and the script. Karamuu did such a good job of building the anticipation. The intimacy he created really made me feel like I was peaking in on something I shouldn't be. I embarrassed to say I wanted to see what was next. :)

Mr. Kush (Lion), this was sexy, alluring, thought provoking and most of all much needed. Well shot, loved seeing the little nuances as background characters. The soundtrack was so on point. Thank you.

  • Harmony | September 11, 2013 3:54 PMReply

Wow! Such an alluring film. I loved the variety of images of beautiful Black women represented. When the film ended, I was left wanting to see more!

  • James | September 11, 2013 2:54 PMReply

Wow. I have to say that it was thoroughly shocking for me, but I enjoyed it. It was reminiscent of 9 1/2 Weeks mixed with the Black films of the 90s (a lá Jason's Lyric and Love Jones). I think anyone can enjoy this film, not just Black people (though I dug the soundtrack and hints of Afro-centricity. There were moments that reminded me of a Common music video from the early 2000s). And it's nice seeing something that portrays us not as caricatures, but intelligent and real human beings.

  • LeonRaymond | September 11, 2013 2:26 PMReply

Intense and very powerful and even the Non dialogue scenes said it all

  • Ingrid Hertfelder | September 11, 2013 2:19 PMReply
