Created by director/producer Angela Tucker, watch episode 6 (embedded below) in the Black Folk Don't docu-series - this one titled Black Folk Don't Get Married.

But first...

It seems like now a days it's hard to find black folk who are ready and willing to say I do, at least that's what all the media coverage about single black women says. Is this a generational issue or are black folk allergic too long term commitment? Or are they just committing in different ways outside the mainstream?

As a black man in America in his 30s, who isn't entirely sold on the idea of marriage as the ultimate (or only) form of commitment, and who doesn't buy into the various stats peddled about single black women and the absence of eligible black men, I especially loved what both Melissa Harris-Perry and Abiola Abrams had to say in the latter half of this episode, starting around the 3:55 mark, until the end of the episode.

But watch the entire season 2, episode 6, on black folks and marriage, below:

I'm in the "single and childless" camp -- and I'll remain there if possible. That said, I think marriage is overrated. Until the last century, it really was about property and assets. Recent generations of women have perpetuated the fantasy of marrying for love above all else. Plus, it's easier for all men to get the milk without purchasing the cow these days -- so that's exactly what we do!

@ WOW--Word. I see a lot of males like Adam in my neighborhood. Just fast forward a few decades to groups of 60+ year old men ogling all the young girls passing by (aka any skirt under 50 years old)-lol

"and I'll remain there if possible ~Adam Thompson". Edit: That should read "You will probably remain there unless you find a woman via love letters from a women's correctional facility". Marriage was about property and assests??? Dude... source material please? And lets see, marrying for love, moral values and as a means to pass on positive family values to offspring is a fantasy perpetuated by women!? DUDE! Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon, the little dog laughed to see Scott's cash, as the Cow said no milk for you baffoon.
