It was in March of last year that we featured the trailer for Stacey Muhammad's REDEMPTION, For Colored Boys, which, as Stacey notes, is the first in a series that address the lives and experiences of black men, broadly speaking.

Starring Rob Morgan (Pariah) and Julito McCullum (The Wire), the film follows the life of Benjamin Boyd, Sr. who is determined to rekindle the spark between he and his wife, and, in turn reunite his family, after nine years in prison.

In the filmmaker's own words:

So, here it is...the short film that I and a group of incredibly talented people got together and made last year. REDEMPTION, For Colored Boys written by yours truly, stars Julito McCullum and Robbie Morgan with Tiye Phoenix Movez Galore Kai Muhammad Familya Stephenson and Danny Simmons. Initially released as a short film on the festival circuit, we are now releasing it online as the first episode of the forthcoming REDEMPTION, For Colored Boys web series. We hope you enjoy it and spread the word, as we'll be sharing our fundraising campaign this weekend in hopes that you'll also support our efforts to produce this series. My sincere gratitude and LOVE to every last person (cast, crew, support, friend, family member, etc.) who supported my vision and this project.

Prior to REDEMPTION, Stacey directed the award-winning short film I Am Sean Bell, Black Boys Speak, which, as the title suggests, features the reactions of black boys reflecting on the well-documented Sean Bell tragedy.

I thought this was powerful and affecting; it was heightened drama, but I thought it stopped well short of melodrama. An absent father returning from prison and being confronted by the family he left behind could very well, it seems to me, be the setting for just such a tense and emotional scene; that rang true to me... I do wish for another title, however---I almost didn't click on it, because it sounded like what Sergio would call a "castor oil" film... Instead, I'm glad I did click on it. I'm interested to find out more of the back-story, and to see what comes next...

I saw this last year and it's clear she over thought it. Melodramatic, not dramatic at all. Great actors that could do better with some harder hitting material. Maybe the rest of the series will be better.
