Murphy

The short story goes... in August 2011, Eddie Murphy teamed up with director Alex Zamm (Tooth Fairy 2, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2) to make a live-action version of the classic cartoon Hong Kong Phooey.

We must have missed the announcement of the project, because, I checked the S&A archives and didn't find any posts on it.

Over a year later, the movie obviously hasn't happened; will it? I dunno. I don't think I particularly care either, especially if the video below is anything to go by.

All that's left of the project is some test footage that was shot for it, and that has surfaced. Apparently Zamm released the footage online, via his Vimeo page, and it's embedded below for you to check out:

The funny thing is this would have probably been the movie that put a little life in Eddie's career. Parents would have probably went in droves with their children to see it. I wonder why they stopped it when it seems like much more of a likely money maker than his other films. It's a character that is already somewhat established in the popular consciousness. It had a character that could be easily marketed on a variety of merchandise. Eddie hasn't falter box office wise when dealing with cartoon characters. Many actors who can't put people in seats with live action can count their trips into animation as financial victories. Not that any of this really should be the way filmmaking works.

I still like Scatman Crothers voice.

"Hong Kong Phooey" looked like it'd be a hit. I'm surprised it didn't move forward. I think folks are just prone to hate anything Murphy gets involved in these days that's not 80's, "Raw" era Eddie. Get over it...

HKP has been in development for years. Brett Ratner had been attached to direct at one time. Eddie Murphy as the main voice character, though was like listening to Donkey and watching him after he was turned into a martial arts outfit wearing dog.

That looks like it would be a horrid movie.

Dodges a bullet on that one. Obviously Warners remembered the last film Murphy did for them was Pluto Nash and rushed to pull the plug on it
