As previously announced in July, AMC Theatres is partnering with newcomer, 306 Releasing, to bring Joshua Sanchez's Independent Spirit Award-nominated drama Four to a theater near you, starting next month.

An adaptation on an off-Broadway play by Christopher ShinnFour stars Wendell Pierce of The Wire fame, alongside Aja Naomi KingEmory CohenE.J. Bonilla and Yolanda Ross, in a tale about of a married black man who steps out on his family, on the night of the Fourth of July, with a much younger white man whom he met online, and the way his family quietly deals with his duplicitous life.

The film's script was both a 2007 Tribeca All Access award recipient, and a 2008 No Borders Independent Film Week selection, with a longer synopsis that reads:

In a nameless, suburban American town, the smell of barbeque fills the air as Fourth of July celebrations move from a hot summer day into night. Joe, a man who works hard and travels a lot, leaves his family behind for the holiday, citing a business trip. Abigayle, his precocious daughter, is left to tend to her ill mother and manage the house on her own, yet again. Seeking just enough attention to get her through another night of her lonely responsibilities, she turns to Dexter, a former high school basketball star whose best days are behind him. And while Abigayle is out with Dexter, Joe is quietly spending time around town with June, a young man he met online who’s struggling to accept himself. And for just this night, the small world that these four live in will become even smaller, though the freedom they experience has never been so dangerous, fleeting and honest.

Wendell Pierce stars as Joe; Aja Naomi King is his daughter Abigayle; Emory Cohen is June, the teenage white boy; E.J. Bonilla plays Dexter; and Yolonda Ross plays Wendell's wife.

Four will be released, beginning September 13, at the following AMC locations:

  • Atlanta – AMC Phipps Plaza 14
  • Atlanta – AMC Southlake 24
  • Baltimore – AMC Owings Mills 17
  • Chicago – AMC River East 21

It made its world premiere at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival, where it picked up the award for Best Performance in the Narrative Competition. And Pierce was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor for his performance.

The film was produced by Christine Giorgio and Pierce, with Allen Frame and Neil LaBute executive producing.

VOD and DVD distribution of the film will be handled by Wolfe Releasing.

Ahead of the film's theatrical debut, 306 Releasing has released a brand new poster for the film, as well as a new clip highlighting Wendell Pierce's character, Joe.
