Continuing with our web series kick... here's another one for ya to watch and rate. As I've said previously, you choose it, we run it. So if your reactions are positive, on average, we'll continue to post episodes of the series. And if negative, well... figure it out :)

This one is titled FAIL, created by Hometeam Entertainment, a production company run by James Bland and Vanessa Baden, who also star in the series.

The web sitcom "chronicles the random misadventures of six college students who form a study group in an attempt to improve their grades, but ends up spending more time in each other’s social circles than in their books."

I'm feeling it. Great quality, good actors, and many laughs. Looking forward to future episodes.

  • Ms. Way | July 11, 2011 6:49 AMReply

As I stated yes there is a difference, so if you weren't just hating then that did not apply to you. I personally like it..I work in the industry and I overstand on how hard it is..which is why we need to constructively uplift one another. No one has to blow smoke up anybodies butt, but comments that just say oh this sucks is not helping anyone. If I person can't sing I won't say you sound great! I will continue to support and stand by every word. I do like the project, and I am still proud of them. With any thing that is starting, yeah it can get better. But just like raising children, you don't get it right in the beginning it takes work, and eventually you become a better parent just give it time.

I am sure with this series...things will get better. Keep up the good work, and continue to work hard to the cast and crew.

The LAST thing a sitcom needs is CANNED LAUGHTER!

  • CareyCarey | July 8, 2011 12:32 PMReply

"Please take note that there is a HUGE difference between “hating” and constructive criticism"

    Say it loud!

"This show also needs the applause factor after the punch lines. Without the sound of audience laughter the punch lines come off even weaker"

    Yes yes yes.

Now.... Ms Way said: "I think it’s pathetic that we (black folk) are so extremely critical of one another. It’s a start people!! Whatever happen to constructive criticism??? Not just attacking for the sake of attacking!!! So yeah I feel close to the project because I love these kids!"

Well Ms Way, show business is a tough business, and tough love should be the lick (the move), not soft pats on the back and fake adulation. How can a person grow in their craft if they are not accepting, open and honest of their shortcomings. Who wants to be lied to softly?

As Observer said: "take it gracefully and thank them for their input and make your next episodes better?"

Also, I'd even respond by asking questions. If several people mentioned there was a lack of timing and poor acting. I'd hurry up and ask the questions: Which actors and which scenes. If several are saying it was not funny and felt scripted, I'd lean toward the suggections of Ruthie... "Keep trying to improve. Study shows like The Cosby Show, Modern Family, Arrested Development, Happy Endings, etc. etc. etc.. And when I say study, I mean take a paper and pen write down the formula of the episodes"

Maybe a live audience is needed. Comic timing depends heavily on the audience. At the very least, through rehearsals with a live audience, one instantly knows what's working and what's stinkin' up the place. The live audience will also make the actors pick up their game. Depending solely on ones homegirls and ride-or-die cut buddies for hard hitting constructive feedback is an act of futility. They may mean well while they stroke the shit out of you and make you feel real good, but when the mess falls down and hits the fan, they're gone like a turkey through the corn.

Shadow and Act can be a tough place to ply one's wares, but it can also be a great place of enlightenment. I guess it depends on what a person is looking for and whose voice or which voices a person listens to (whose ass to bite on, or whose nuts to swing on)

In short, don't fight the love, ask questions. Embrace the comments... hug 'em like you love 'em, and any suspected "haters" will run from love..

  • Ruthie | July 8, 2011 11:35 AMReply

I am so happy to see people following their hearts and creating. That's what we as actors/writers/creators, etc have to do. I am also so happy to see my fellow black people doing things as well. :)

Comedy is difficult to write. So difficult! And also difficult to act. Extremely difficult! I am currently trying to write a comedy web series as well. Keep it up. Keep trying to improve. Study shows like The Cosby Show, Modern Family, Arrested Development, Happy Endings, etc. etc. etc.. And when I say study, I mean take a paper and pen write down the formula of the episodes. You will get a knack for the timing and the jokes, and everything. That's what I'm trying to do in order to write comedy. Also read Save the Cat if you haven't already.

I am so proud of you all. Keep up the great work. Take the positive criticism and run with it. Discard the people who are just spewing hate. Can't wait to see where this goes!

  • VichusSmith | July 8, 2011 11:15 AMReply

This comment, in particular, is suspect, to make an understatement:

"Team Fail: KEEP EM COMING! Absolutely hilarious—can’t wait til Episode 2 premieres on Fri July 15 at 7pm EST. Thanks Shadow and Act for hosting!"

    That's a hideous fake comment.

  • Observer | July 8, 2011 10:31 AMReply

To the FAIL creators - Please take note that there is a HUGE difference between "hating" and constructive criticism. Wouldn't you think that the people reading Shadow & Act would want a group of young, intelligent (though more intelligence in the show and writing would be nice) African Americans to succeed and bring our audience a solid show with great new talent?

So instead of just coming back calling people's observations hating, and like CareyCarey said - flooding the board with really positive comments all of a sudden...why not take what the people are saying and use it to better your product? These people would be your audience, after all. If you want a real following you have to give audience what they want. And they're telling you.

It seems like it has real potential, why not take it gracefully and thank them for their input and make your next episodes better? Maybe I'm crazy.

Something about African Americans Fail-ing? I think we're better than that.

  • Daygo | July 8, 2011 6:41 AMReply

what we all have to understand is that this is the start of a show, production done by ppl who dont have the accolades of Tyler Perry or Spike LEE, ITS THEIR START! It wont be perfect and it wont be the best out the gate. But it will get better. To think a group of young black ppl put together a show, got it edited, and published it, BRAVO!

Keep up the good work. Build on the success and make every episode better.
But lets be understanding that this is their start ppl, we are quick to criticize but wouldn't have the balls or determination to do it ourself. Well done cast of FAIL keep it goin.

  • VichusSmith | July 8, 2011 6:07 AMReply

It's alright. I think the acting could be stronger. I think The cousin is the weakest actor, and I'm wondering how many episodes it would take before the Breezy guy became totally annoying.

  • Ms. Way | July 8, 2011 5:15 AMReply

I am 43 years old, and I think it's pathetic that we (black folk) are so extremely critical of one another. It's a start people!! Whatever happen to constructive criticism??? Not just attacking for the sake of attacking!!! So yeah I feel close to the project because I love these kids! They are doing well, and they are working towards a goal, and will reach it! Vanessa is smart, beautiful and talented! James is the best, with a very successful short film out right now "CoCoa Love..check it out! Whitney your spirit is amazing, and your funny! ... Everyone has to have a starting point. Go to you tube, get acquainted with the characters, have some understanding the what you're actually looking at, and then judge. Don't just come out swinging because you have a keyboard!!! We are suppose to build each other up, not tear one another down. Seriously folks... SMH @ deep hearted haters

  • CareyCarey | July 8, 2011 4:44 AMReply

    Daint funny at all!

The acting is/was terrible and the writing was no better. This thang was a total embarrassment. Now I could be wrong but who else feels as if most the favorable comments were generated by one or two people? They just seemed soooo scripted. None of them spoke of any specific scenes or characters that would have validated their comment. And, they hit the board with the gusto of a flash flood.

I am left to wonder who’s the target audience for this train wreck? Really, the acting was poor (their timing sucked and they seemed to be reading their lines), and the jokes were not funny .

  • babyboy | July 8, 2011 4:43 AMReply

Great start! It's going to get bigger and better. Im praying for the success of this show... Huge fan of supporting our ppl trying to make positive moves in life. well produced!

Not to mention Jones is a cutie... ;-)

Good luck cast! Keep it going!

  • i see | July 8, 2011 4:38 AMReply

I think it was a great start. Keep growing and keep developing the characters! Screw Kayheart. Its life, and its reality, as a college grad I dealt with all the character personalities in the premiere....
    Good luck FAIL cast!

Next time lets get a 15min show!!! lol

  • Kayheart | July 8, 2011 3:42 AMReply

I actually liked the show. I know it can definitely get better. Keep it coming.

  • Honest Critic | July 8, 2011 2:42 AMReply

The concept is on point.. the editing, theme song and video quality is good.. The punch lines can be alot stronger.. This show also needs the applause factor after the punch lines. Without the sound of audience laughter the punch lines come off even weaker..

  • A.B. | July 8, 2011 1:30 AMReply

I found the pilot mildly offensive. As far as I am concerned, Its chief accomplishment is championing poorly constructed archetypes of African-American youth (which seems to be a prevailing trend). The characters are expected to make rash, impulsive and poorly thought out decisions, not because they are young, but because they are willingly uninformed.

I applaud the effort of the creator, and am willing to excuse the actors, but unwilling to accept a "comedy" about unnecessarily confused college students who aren't seeking out meaningful life choices.

I hope future episodes are better done

I don't know what you guys are talkin about... the show is HILARIOUS. Sure a little rough around the edges, but its fresh, edgy, and (counter everything Hollywood) COMPLETELY ORIGINAL. This is the dawn of a new era... when finally, FINALLY we stop regurgitating old ideas. Two thumbs up and five stars.

  • TeamKhleo | July 7, 2011 6:33 AMReply

It's nice to see young African Americans creating the work for themselves when so many others, aren't giving them a shot! Keep up the good work, and keep striving for the best. With any show, you have to get a following. Everyone won't like it, and that's cool. Many of us will! I am one of them.

I look forward to the next episode!

The girl that plays Hope was in Keenan & Kel. She played Keenan's little sister. Does this remind anyone else of Community minus the laughs?
