Weekend B.O. Feb.1-3 (Another Lousy Weekend)

Industry insiders are getting worried about the tepid box office results duing the past few weeks. Nothing new that has come out lately seems to be of the public's interest.

Opening box office results for new films this year have been either lackluster or disasterous, such as Sly Stallone's new film Bullet to the Head, which marked the return to the big screen in a decade of one of my absolutely favorite directors Walter Hill, but which tanked this weekend, opening with a horrible $4.5 million.

Warm Bodies, the zomie teenage romantic satire/horror film, was No. 1 this weekend, but opened way under what was hoped for.

It's been mainly the older films from December and before that are still holding on well, such as Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln and even Argo that should give Hollywood studios a clue that there is still, and always has been, a huge audience for more serious, intelligent adult films.

Meanwhile Django Unchained has already passed the $150 million mark domestically, and, as of this weekend, will have grossed over $130 million overseas.

Who the hell is worried? Films released in the first quarter always do these type of numbers. See Chronicle which was released the exact same weekend last year and did 22 million. Nothing new.
