Everyone knows that animated films tend to do extremely well at the box office and that The Lorax would, not surprisingly, do very well this weekend..  But no one predicted the stunning results  with the film raking in $70 million leaving everything else in the dust behind it.

Project X came in a distant 2nd while TP's Good Deeds dropped 55% from last week. Now he's had other films that have made as similar as big a drop in their second week, so this is not actually all that unusual for him. But that steep a drop indicates maybe some things; 1) that the word of mouth on Good Deeds isn't good , 2) that everyone who really wanted to see the film went on the first weekend, 3) that unless he's in drag people aren't that interested or 4) all of the above. What do you say?

1) Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Uni. $70,700,000
2) Project X WB $20,775,000
3) Act of Valor Rela. $13,700,000 Total: $45,239,000

Actually a 55% isn't a steep drop. That actually pretty decent. 'Steep' drops are somewhere in the range of 70%+

The Lorax has had more promotion than any movie I've seen in recent memory so yea if it didn't do this well, it would've been a flop. And I think Good Deeds is doing "safe" numbers" still actually. What the hell is Project X?

I think everyone that wanted to see Good Deeds have already one. I've yet to hear any negative vibes from those who have seen it. In fact 100% of folks that have seen in it my city praised him for at least trying something different. So he did get a victory in that aspect. Also you have to look at what was happening this weekend-how many Tyler Perry fans went to basketball tournaments instead of the movies? It might drop out of the top 10 with all the black colleges having their tournaments this week and Spring Break starting up.

Perry's audience is small, and fiercely loyal when he gives them what they want...and that's Madea and Southern Christian sub-themes. Whenever he "diverges" from that expected path, (For Colored Girls, Family Who Preys) they tend to not represent as strongly. Welcome to your gilded cage Tyler.
