Just shows you how much I know, which any regular reader of S & A can tell you isn't much. I figured that Men In Black III was going to underperform in its opening weekend release, because I didn't think there was any interest from anyone in a new MIB movie.

I mean, were you counting down the days until the release date of the film?

But MIB III did much better than I expected, through some are saying that the $70 million take the film will make by the end of the Memorial Day weekend, Monday night, can be considered a disappointment because it was expected to do $80 million or more. I thought the film would be extremely lucky if it made $50 million by the end of the holiday weekend.

However the film still has a long way to go considering its budget, which is rumored, because of costly delays due to script problems and production shutdowns, to be anywhere between $250-300 million. Though I have heard rumors that the budget was more in the $440 million range. And that's before marketing.

1) Men in Black 3 (Columbia/Sony) Weekend $56M, 4-Day Holiday $70M
2) The Avengers (Disney) Weekend $38M, 4-Day Holiday $48.5M, Total: $525.2M
3) Battleship (Universal) Weekend $10.7M, 4-Day Holiday $13.3M, Total: $46.8M
4) The Dictator (Paramount) Weekend $9.2M, 4-Day Holiday $11.5M, Total: $43.3M
5) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros) Weekend $7.4M, 4-Day Holiday $9.4M, Total: $64.9M
6) Chernobyl Diaries (Alcon/Warner Bros) Weekend $7.9M, 4-Day Holiday $9.2M
7) What To Expect When You’re Expecting (Lionsgate) Weekend $7.0M, 4-Day Holiday $8.7M, Total: $23.7M
8) Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Fox Searchlight) Weekend $6.3M, 4-Day Holiday $8.0M, Total: $18.2M
9) The Hunger Games (Lionsgate) Weekend $2.3M, 4-Day Holiday $3.0M, Total: $396.0M
10) Think Like A Man (Screen Gems/Sony) Weekend $1.4M, 4-Day Holiday $1.8M, Total: $88.7M

According to Boxofficemojo Men in Black III has already made over $200 million worldwide. The studios really count on the foreign box office and Will Smith is very popular overseas. I think Will has proven he is the most successful black male actor in Hollywood history. He doesn't need white side kicks like Denzel Washington does in order to have a hit movie. This movie is a success only because of Will Smith.

Will has always paid attention to the overseas market and that publicity work has paid off. Good for him.

Well deserved, it was a fun film to go see with the family. Nice way to end the trilogy.

I didn't make it out, but I'm glad to hear the film did fairly well. I do plan to see it.
