Production has begun on a remake of the 2005 Spanish/Argentine film, Elsa & Fred, with Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer starring in the romantic comedy, which Michael Radford is directing.
Thanks to Wendell Pierce, we can confirm that both he, Pierce, and Erika Alexander play supporting characters in the upcoming film, which centers on a retiree living in New Orleans (MacLaine) and the unwanted neighbour - a straight-laced widower played by Plummer - who moves into her apartment building, and the love story that develops afterward.
Obviously Elsa & Fred refer to the characters MacLaine and Plummer will play in the film.
The original 2005 movie, written and directed by Marcos Carnevale, was a huge box office hit in Argentina, and the remake was successfully shopped/packaged at the American Film Market a month or two ago.
The American remake will shoot in New Orleans and Rome; principal photography begins today.
I haven't seen the original film, but with this rather strong cast MacLaine, Plummer, Pierce, Alexander, as well as Marcia Gay Harden), I'm already intrigued by both the original and the remake; I'll seek out the original film and watch it... eventually.
