Films of 2011 pic 66

So this is the time of the year where every film critic and association on the planet makes their list of the top films for 2011.  However, I though it would be nice to ask YOU, the savvy S&A reader, what films made your "Best Of 2011" list?  I'm actually quite curious.

There aren't any limitations to this list so perhaps you discovered an obscure Croatian dance flick over the summer you'd like to mention...hmm?  Alright, not likely but you get the point!

The Artist is the Best film of 2011 for me so far. I must finish watching a bunch of screener copies before I make it official.

For me a bunch of definitely to say. What came to my mind right away are like The Future of Miranda July, Another Earth of Mike Cahill and Brit Marling, kinda same common the sense of depression from Melancholia. Have to mention MMMM. Oh, the most my fav. one is Young Adult.

Apologies - I tried separating the entries, but they all "entered" on screen grouped together.

In no particular order, my favorite films are -

Rise Of The Planet of The Apes - I believe the theme of this film is what made it so compelling to moviegoers.

Restless City - Beautiful looking film

Attack The Block - Really nice spin on the science fiction genre. Refreshing to see people of color as leads in the genre. The theme of ATB was great as well.

13 Assassins - Really good movie. Not what I expected going in. A very involved setup in the 1st and second acts, with a huge payoff at the end. Probably the best action sequence for a "non-commercial" feature release.

Viva Riva - It was interesting seeing, and I say this for lack of a better term right now, an Congolese film handled with a heavy Western influence.

Black Power Mix Tape - Interesting and moving documentary. Some very touching scenes, especially the interview of Angela Davis and the young girl. Also being that the film was directed from a point of view from a different culture was interesting.

Bhutto - Really chilling and detailed documentary on the life of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Without a doubt, this was a down year. So, off the top of my head I have to go with the animation Rango. Hey, the question asked " YOU, the savvy S&A reader, what films made your "Best Of 2011" list. Sooo if I had 5 days to think about it, Rango might not be my #1 (might not) but it gave me so much pleasure. Anyway, let me think about this... Huuuummm, I'm looking for a movie that made me smile and gave me something to talk about the next day. Oh hell, how could I forget The Help. Yep, it's in my best of 2011. On the other hand, Super 8 and Attack On The Block (identical movies in many ways)was geared toward a teenage crowd (imo) so although a couple of actors in AOTB did the damn thang, it wouldn't make my best list. However, the one thousandth installment of The Planet of the Apes, did! Oh yeah, in spite of it's numerous flaws, I enjoyed watching it. But now I'm stumped, I'm lost for words because nothing is flowing through this fuzzy head of mine. I mean, it could be my lost of memory or it could simply be the fact that this was a pitiful year for moving watching.

Out of the 2011 films I've seen so far 50/50 was my favorite.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes by far. Out of all the summer flicks this year, I was least excited about Apes. Imagine my surprise when it ended being the most poignant, thrilling, and satisfying film of them all, and the only film that has truly resonated with me all year, with one or two minor exceptions. (The Help, Super 8)

Viva Riva. Nothing else was close imo..

My favorite film this year is Shame, which seems to have scared off a lot of people. The most overrated film is Melancholia--the emperor continues to have no clothes. Best performance is Michael Fassbender in Shame. The most overrated is Viola Davis in The Help, for mailing in the same stoic performance she has given in every film I have seen her in.
