Will Smith
Will Smith

UPDATE: Within minutes of posting this, Variety writer Justin Kroll posted the following on Twitter: "Update: Kristen Stewart no longer attached to FOCUS, Will Smith only actor involved with film"

That changes my original post a bit. When you read it, you'll see why. Let's see who replaces Kristen Stewart now that she's out.

The original post follows below:

Hmm... Interesting pairing here, and not one I would have expected to see at all.

Variety is reporting that Will Smith is in "final talks" to star in what will be his next project (after this summer's After Earth, starring his son Jaden Smith), for Warner Bros., titled Focus, which has Kristen Stewart already attached to star.

In the film, written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), the Focus story will center on an inexperienced female con artist who teams up with a more seasoned male con artist.

Stewart will play the former, while Will Smith will pay the latter.

Apparently, the project is one that the filmmakers have been trying to get off the ground since last year, when their original idea was to reteam their Crazy, Stupid, Love co-stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, for the lead roles. Scheduling conflicts with Gosling got in the way of that happening.

Other top-tier actors had been courted for the part - Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck notably. Pitt apparently wasn't interested, however, Affleck was, but was pulled away by other commitments.

So, in comes Will Smith, who Variety says has been considering the project for "the last several months," on his search for what he would do next. And he's now committed to it, with a deal currently being worked out.

Again, an interesting choice for him here, especially when you consider that, looking over his IMDBPro page, there are at least 20 different projects that he could've tackled next, over this one.

But maybe it's a great script, and he might be considering the fact that Stewart is kind of *hot* right now, with the recent success of the Twilight franchise; although she's acted in other films. However, none of her other titles did all that well at the box office - certainly not anywhere close to what the Twilight films did in ticket sales, and profit.

It's just an interesting and unexpected pairing to me; so let's see how this goes. I wish I could get my hands on the script for this...
