The beat goes on for the Smith Family's adaptation of the Broadway classic musical Annie, with Willow Smith in the title role, and poppa and momma Smith producing under their Overbrook Entertainment banner, in a joint venture with Jay-Z, who will also produce the soundtrack for the film.

Last we reported on this, Glee creator, Ryan Murphy, dropped out of contention for the directing job, despite being poppa Smith's top choice for the gig. His replacement hasn't been announced yet, but Big Willie continues to push forward, with the latest news being that he and Jay-Z are "in negotiations" with Brit actress/writer Emma Thompson to pen the screenplay of the updated musical.

Thompson's credits are impressive - nominated multiple times for Academy Awards, winning twice in the 1990s - one for Best Actress in 1992 for her performance in Howards End, and the other for Best Adapted Screenplay for penning the Sense and Sensibility script in 1995.

Considering his penchant for pimping out his children, wouldn't it be more appropriate for Will to be re-making "Gypsy?"

    @ Kia

Come on, you know there are NO black screenwriters at that level.

I'm happy for her, but Sense and Sensibility and Annie aren't actually similar. Winning the oscar for a screenplay does not qualify you to write every story out there. The point is.. you have the power to give someone else a chance, why not do it. The movie will have a diverse cast, why not allow that to flow over to the rest of the above the line staff :)

@ Kia, Emma Thompson is not "just" an actress. She's also an Oscar winner screenwriter.

She won the Oscar for Sense and Sensibility. She has gone on to write other films.

So the plan is to cut out the opportunity for a writer by replacing them with an oscar winning actress. Two for the price of one: she can write it and act it as well--assuming there's a role for her.

Can't find any black screenwriters for a musical? Think outside the box Will or is it all about the $$$? After all, you wouldn't have been a famous actor if it wasn't for Benny Medina.
