Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are reportedly both in talks to join Will Smith and Jaden Smith in 1000 A.E., the scifi action/adventure movie that M. Night Shyamalan is attached to direct.

A brief recap... the post-apocalyptic a father and son (Will and Jaden of course) who crashland on an earth that has become uninhabitable, and the son, considered a failure as a warrior, is put in a position in which he has to save his father, who has already proven his worth as a hero.

If deals don't fall through, Zoe Kravitz will play Will’s daughter/Jaden's sister, and Sophie Okonedo will play Will's wife/Jaden's mother.

And you all thought that they'd just cast Willow and Jada. Psssht! :)

Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) was recently brought on to polish up Shaymalan's script (a good idea IMHO), and Colombia Pictures is said to be planning an early 2012 production start date, with a June 2013 release.

I'm guessing both the sister and mother roles will be peripheral to the core story between father and son, in what will likely be more of a coming-of-age tale (or coming-into-his-own) tale with Jaden as the real star of the film.

So this should be Will's next, after Men In Black 3 is released next summer.

I'm sure the script for 1000 A.E. is floating around out there somewhere... so if anyone comes across it, holla :)

Colorism is now playing a major role in this film as others alike.

Zeus, there is some merit to what T. Payne is saying. Not necessarily about "color" & it's not that they're all "identical", but the idea of casting has changed very much over the last few decades. The idea of individuality is gone & repeatability is the new norm-almost stock actors instead of stock characters. The woman credited with the modern way of casting, Marion Dougherty, just passed and yes, while most of her "discoveries" we mostly white, the idea of how to get INTERESTING people (& by extension interesting ACTORS) is sound as hell. Pretty damn interesting when you think about the faces we see now & how they ALL follow similar formats (skin color, nationality, age etc) http://www.deadline.com/2011/12/r-i-p-marion-dougherty/

Sophie Okonedo is above all else TALENTED. As far as casting/acting goes, talent trumps appearance/skin color for. Now if it was Paula Patton, Leila Arcieri, Rochelle Aytes, or any other light-skinned, long-haired no-talent in this role, yeah, I'd have beef.

They don't. You're generalizing and Sophie Okonedo is British.

  • T. Payne | December 6, 2011 11:50 PM

Agreed. Why does every actress in America look the same?

Does M. Night Shyamalan really have to direct this? It could be decent otherwise!

I was with the story up until I saw "...that M. Night Shyamalan is attached to direct." I foresee much suck in this movie's future. Too bad because Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are hot and decent actresses.

As they say in the military, "I concur".

That script is locked down tight, so I doubt you can get your hands on it. I'm a fan of both of these ladies, so good for them (assuming their deals close)!
