We spout opinion, comment on the current zeitgeist and overanalyze pop culture and mainstream movies. Whether in the form of lists, survey questions or straight editorials, we hope to make thinking deeply about film a fun and stimulating activity for all.

Is there any reason to see "The Iron Lady" than to watch Meryl Streep knock another one out of the park? Was there any reason to watch the Bulls in the late '80s other than to see Michael Jordan? I don't know. I haven't seen the new Margaret Thatcher biopic, and I don't know anything about basketball. I do know docs, though, and so I have another Doc Option for you.

One of the best films of 2011 finally hits theaters in the U.S. today. Wim Wenders' "PINA" is a marvelous, magnificent, necessary and pioneering 3D documentary. I reviewed the film back in October during the New York Film Festival. Here's an excerpt.

Two Doc Option columns in the same week? Hey, if Steven Spielberg can release two movies back to back, it's only fair that I get to provide alternatives for both. So yeah, here's another Doc Option for you:

Have you ever wondered where Steven Spielberg got the name for his production company, Amblin Entertainment? It comes from the filmmaker's first commercially released film, a 35mm short from 1968 titled "Amblin'." As it turns out, yesterday was the 43rd anniversary of its debut.

I know, you're so excited about the new "Alvin and the Chipmunks" sequel, "Chipwrecked," but the theaters are going to be packed with obnoxious children all weekend so why not wait a bit? In the meantime, I have another Doc Option for you.

Recently, I was watching "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and I started to think about my own personal finances. There are actually lots of movies that teach us financial lessons without really trying. When you think about it, there are lessons in films in every category, from dramas and thrillers to our favorite Disney movies.

Reboot This: "Alfred Hitchcock and The Three Investigators"

It's typically annoying when a film franchise is immediately rebooted, but it's doubtful any of you have even seen either 2007's "The Three Investigators and the Secret of Skeleton Island" or the 2009 sequel, "The Three Investigators and the Secret of Terror Castle." Supposedly Disney released the first film theatrically in the U.S., but I don't recall that ever happening. They seem primarily set up at Buena Vista International for German-speaking audiences (though they were filmed in English), because the young adult mystery novels they're based on have remained more popular in Europe than in America. Kind of like "Tintin" but with material originating here.
