5 Steven Spielberg Movie-Turned-Musicals You Didn't Know Existed

By Christopher Campbell | Spout September 21, 2010 at 12:03PM

Yesterday's New York Times announced that a musical version of "Catch Me If You Can" (pictured) is opening on Broadway in April of next year (previews begin in March). The production seems a pretty big deal, and I would be surprised I'd never heard of this if every single movie in history wasn't rumored or reported to have a musical coming at some time or another. This one is from writer Terrence McNally (movie-turned-musicals include "The Full Monty" and an opera version of "Dead Man Walking") and the songwriters, choreographer and director who previously collaborated for the "Hairspray" musical.

This isn't the first musical to be adapted from a Steven Spielberg film -- or based on the same source material as a Spielberg film. On Broadway there was "The Color Purple." Off Broadway and very far from Broadway there have been a few others (some based on films he merely wrote and/or produced). These aren't just parody sketches, either. Most are actual staged shows. I've included some you've likely never heard of, though only those that have embeddable video clips, after the jump.

"Jaws"

Well of course this exists. Written/directed/composed by a Wesleyan student a few years ago, it really looks like something produced by Max Fischer. Continue with part 2 and continue through to the end over at YouTube.

"Jurassic Park"

Anyone else think the "Rent" spoof is a bit in poor taste? Another number can be seen here, and a trailer for a documentary about the production here.

"Amistad"

Talk about wrong. This isn't so much based on the Spielberg film as the historical case, though it doesn't really resemble either. The kids who made this high school project got a 77%. What's that, a C+? They got off lucky.

"The Goonies"

Okay, so this one is a bit of a cheat, as the duo who wrote the above tune apparently haven't yet staged their "Goonies" musical. But since I have actually seen another production, an NYC Fringe Fest show titled "Save the Goondocks," (how it's not anywhere on the web, I don't understand) I'm spotlighting both. You can also find clips online of songs written for Sloth, the wishing well scene and the water slide tubes.

"Back to the Future"

This is just a montage of rehearsal footage for a UPENN glee club production. I'm assuming it ended up on the stage as planned, and if so I really hope someone can steer me to the real deal.
